Julia Stiles (10 Things I Hate About You, Silver Linings Playbook), is part of a new comedy series streaming on Amazon Prime called The Lake. The new comedy made its bow on Prime on June 16 and has steadily risen up the streaming charts in the days following its release. Now, according to FlixPatrol, Julia Stiles’ new comedy series is sitting pretty in the top three of most-watched shows on Amazon Prime.

The main focus of The Lake is Justin, portrayed by Jordan Gavaris (Orphan Black) who returns home after a long period abroad in order to reconnect with the biological daughter he gave up for adoption. Enter Julia Stiles as Maisy-May, Justin’s step-sister that to his horror, has inherited the coveted Canadian lakeside family cottage from his father. In a bid to bond with his daughter and reclaim what he believes to be rightfully his, Justin engages in a battle of wits with his step-sister. You can see the trailer for the new comedy below.

It would appear that Julia Stiles and The Lake has made quite the splash with Amazon Prime viewers, first charting in the top five of most-watched shows on Prime on June 18, then climbing to fourth on June 19, before reaching the top three today. The show is created and written by Julian Doucet and kicks off with Billie’s adoptive parents dropping her off at the lake her biological father Justin grew up at for the summer. Justin has just been through a major break-up and will be meeting his biological daughter in the flesh for the first time. The all-important cottage that Justin wishes to wrestle control away from his step-sister Maisy-May was, in part, not bestowed upon him due to the circumstances surrounding him and his biological daughter. Justin accidentally got his best friend pregnant as a teenager and subsequently took to a new life in Australia after coming out. The circumstances apparently didn’t go down well with his late father, hence Julia Stiles’ Maisy-May becomes the cottage’s custodian.

The Lake is the first Amazon Prime Original scripted series in Canada. Yahoo News Canada is proud of the fact and is of the belief that The Lake is proof that Canadian shows can be just as good as their US counterparts. Decider writes that The Lake is worth streaming and likens the show to other notable Canadian-based sitcoms such as Schitt’s Creek and Workin’ Moms. They also praise the performance of Julia Stiles in the show. It appears that the actress is the somewhat dark horse talent of the new series. It is currently unknown if Amazon Prime plan to renew the show for a second season.

The creative team behind The Lake will be hoping that the streaming success of the show will continue, as will its star Julia Stiles. Stiles has been a consistent presence in film and television ever since the late nineties. Her first big film came in 1997, where Stiles starred alongside the likes of Harrison Ford and Brad Pitt in the Alan J. Pakula thriller The Devil’s Own. Just two years later and Julia Stiles would appear in the film that would make her a household name, 10 Things I Hate About You. The high-school-based Romantic Comedy, based on William Shakespeare’s The Taming of the Shrew saw Stiles play the love interest of the late Heath Ledger and is still beloved by fans two decades after its initial release.

It wouldn’t take Julia Stiles long to find another huge cinema role after 10 Things I Hate About You. Stiles played a major role in the 2001 action thriller The Bourne Identity and would go on to star in three more of the Matt Damon-led films that would redefine the action movie genre. In recent years, Stiles has starred in the likes of Hustlers and has had leading television roles in shows such as Riviera. Julia Stiles’ career will ensure that she is always remembered as an integral part of two groundbreaking films in 10 Things I Hate About You and The Bourne Identity, and the Emmy-nominated actress will be hoping her enduring star power will help The Lake swim happily in the streaming charts for weeks to come.
