There was a time when Ben Stiller was mainly known as a comic actor, including on the MTV comedy series The Ben Stiller Show. While he’s been directing in film and on television on and off since the late eighties, it’s in the last year that he’s made what could possibly survive as his most ambitious and interesting project — Apple TV+’s science fiction psychological thriller Severance. But now Stiller is going beyond theatrics to work toward something else entirely. As evidenced by his Instagram feed, Stiller is in Poland, doing what he can to help refugees from Ukraine.

Over the weekend, Ben Stiller posted an image to his official Instagram account showing the Severance showrunner in a warehouse speaking to two women. The caption reads, “I’ve just arrived in Poland with UNHCR, to meet families whose lives have been torn apart by war and violence in Ukraine. Millions have been forced to flee their homes with over 90% being women and children. I’m here to learn, to share stories that illustrate the human impact of war and to amplify calls for solidarity. I hope you’ll follow along and share your own messages of support, for people who have fled their homes in Ukraine and for people who have been forced to flee all over the world.  Everyone has the right to seek safety. Whoever, wherever, whenever.” You can see the image below.

Ben Stiller is the latest celebrity to work on behalf of the UNHCR (United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees) to protect the people of Ukraine during Russia’s invasion of the country. Back in April, Eternals star Angelina Jolie wound up all over social media in videos taken in the western Ukrainian city of Lviv, where she was acting on behalf of the UNHCR. Along with being spotted by fans at a cafe, videos were taken of Jolie at the rail station waiting to welcome to the arriving displaced refugees from Pokrovsk.

As The Hollywood Reporter notes, Mystic River star Sean Penn was also in Ukraine recently, making a documentary about Russia’s invasion. THR also says the star is in regular contact with Ukraine President Volodymyr Zelensky and continues to push for the United States to do everything it can to support Ukraine. Along with Penn, Jolie, and Ben Stiller; the Ukrainian born star Mila Kunis and husband Ashton Kutcher have worked hard to raise money for humanitarian aid, and have so far raised in the neighborhood of $36 million for the task.

Sadly in spite of the efforts of Ben Stiller and others, the source of the problem — the Russian invasion — doesn’t seem ready to abate any time soon. Ukraine is nevertheless making Russian forces suffer considerably according to the BBC. The news agency reports that “morale and poor discipline” is running wild in Russian ranks after the losses of large numbers of “middle and junior ranking officers.” Regardless, Russian forces continue heavily bombarding Ukraine’s eastern cities in particular.
