Doctor Strange 2 was yet another success in a long line of successes for the MCU, pulling in over $942 million worldwide. Part of this success was due to the promise of seeing various characters pulled from all the corners of the multiverse. With the complexity of the story and all of the prominent characters that Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness had to juggle, it’s not surprising that some scenes were left on the cutting room floor. One deleted scene, that was recently released, sees a younger Stephen Strange and his former paramour Christine Palmer talking about a procedure they came up with together in an interview. Check out the clip below:
Watching the clip, it’s not too hard to see why Doctor Strange 2 couldn’t fit this scene in. While it gives us a little bit of extra backstory on Strange’s career as a surgeon and the work he did with Rachel McAdam’s Christine Palmer, it would have probably felt awkward being placed in the already busy movie. While the movie did focus on the relationship between the two at multiple points, it doesn’t really feel like this scene would have added much to the story.
One interesting possibility for this scene would be if the Strange seen in the clip was a variant of Doctor Strange that we’re familiar with. Doctor Strange 2 had several Doctor Strange variants featured throughout the film, with most of them being much less noble than the Strange from the primary universe. Maybe this scene would have shown Strange what his life would be like if he never got in the car crash that damaged his hands, causing him to seek out a way to heal them and become the Sorcerer Supreme.
Regardless of the reason, they cut this scene from Doctor Strange 2, the end result would be the same. In the movie, Christine Palmer has moved on a married someone else. Though Doctor Strange meets a Christine Palmer variant when he’s in the custody of the Illuminati, he ends up returning to his own universe. Meaning there likely won’t be any more romantic relationship between the two former co-workers. However, the next time we see Doctor Strange, he may have a new love interest in the form of Charlize Theron’s Clea. In the end credits scene, we see Clea come through a portal to ask Doctor Strange, who now has a third eye, for help. In the comics, these two characters have a romantic relationship and Clea is easily Doctor Strange’s most well-known love interest.
It’s always interesting to see what doesn’t get used in MCU movies, and as Doctor Strange 2 nears a home release, there’s always the chance that we could get some more deleted scenes. Until then, we’ll just have to settle with the current version of the movie that we have. If you haven’t seen Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness yet or if you want to experience the madness again, you’ll be able to watch it from the comfort of your couch soon enough. It is set to hit Disney+ on June 22.
