Remember the live-action remake of Aladdin that starred Will Smith as the genie? Remember that it made over $1 billion in box office numbers? Well, those both certainly happened, and it was helmed by fan-favorite action and gangster film writer/director, Guy Ritchie. It has now been announced that Ritchie is set to return to the House of Mouse, but this time he is going to be remaking arguably the best Disney movie ever made. What movie is that? None other than the famed Hercules. Hercules joins a growing list of animated Disney features that are getting the live-action treatment.
The live-action Hercules is being made in association with Disney and AGBO, which happens to be the production company owned by the Russo Brothers. The Russo Brothers famously directed Avengers: Endgame, so that might entice people to be much more on board with this new take on the Roman god. It is going to be interesting to see where Guy Ritchie takes this story. He did alter a bit of the story that takes place in the original Aladdin film, so we might be seeing a much different Hercules film as well. The studio is said to be looking for writers for the film after Dave Callaham had initially written the first draft of the film. It doesn’t sound as though Ritchie is going to be writing this adaptation, though there is plenty of time for that to still happen.
Guy Ritchie is famous for having written and directed UK-based gangster films like Lock, Stock, and Two Smoking Barrels, Snatch, Revolver, RocknRolla, and Wrath of Man. Most of which have featured longtime collaborator, Jason Statham. Things began to change for the director as he switched things up with films like Sherlock Holmes, King Arthur, and the previously mentioned Aladdin remake. Now he gets to have his unique spin come over for one of the most entertaining Disney films. Hercules initially came out in 1997 and became one of the most successful animated features ever produced. Now Ritchie is set to take the film and essentially do what he did for Aladdin.
Despite people griping about the live-action Aladdin, the film scored massive box office numbers that totaled $1.05 billion. Those are some huge gains, and it appears as if Disney now wants the man to take over for Hercules. He is also working on the Aladdin 2 sequel as well, though we are not sure where the story can go now that the genie was made into a human by the end of the film. Things have only been announced currently, so there are no casting announcements. However, if Danny DeVito doesn’t reprise his role as Phil, this will be a huge tragedy. The same goes for James Woods as Hades.
Guy Ritchie is a busy man, so we might not be seeing Hercules anytime soon, as he is working on many things. However, we can’t wait to see what this new live-action remake is going to look like. We hope it is darker than its predecessor.
