Game of Thrones fans rejoice because it looks like we are soon headed back to the world of Westeros to pick up what happened in the aftermath of the series. In a somewhat surprising move, it’s been announced that Kit Harrington has signed on for a sequel series to the HBO blockbuster show that will follow his character of Jon Snow in the timeline after the original show. The Hollywood Reporter has it that the new project is currently in early development for HBO and if it were to move forward then we would begin an entirely new timeline for this series around one of the more popular characters.
There are very few details right now about what a Kit Harrington as Jon Snow series could look like as a Game of Thrones sequel, though it’s an exciting prospect nonetheless. The attention for this franchise had seemingly been solely focused on the upcoming prequel series, House of the Dragon, which will explore the timeline about 200 years before the events of the show. So getting new stories in this world opens up a whole host of possibilities about where HBO plans to take the franchise in the future.
Considering where we left Kit Harrington in Game of Thrones, and the popularity of his Jon Snow character, a spinoff/ sequel series around this world would make sense to start off with this guy. The last we saw of Jon Snow was following the events at Kings Landing in which he eventually killed Emilia Clarke’s Daenerys after her dragon-led rampage through those streets. Jon Snow had decided to return to Castle Black and was even venturing out north of the Wall with a band of Wildlings. For a new Jon Snow series, this would be as good a starting point as any for Kit Harrington and company.
With this latest announcement that Kit Harrington is in development on some sort of Jon Snow series, we are sure to get more and more details in due time. Will other Game of Thrones characters be returning? At the least, we should get Kristofer Hivju’s Tormund Giantsbane who had returned to the Wall with Jon Snow. That character alone would be worth the watch. And maybe we will see John Bradley’s Samwell Tarly considering the bond the two formed over the course of the series.
If Kit Harrington has a Jon Snow series in development can other characters be too far behind? Maisie Williams’s Arya Stark perhaps? Last we saw her she had left Kings Landing and was taking her fighting style to new lands in order to explore, as she set sail on the Western sea. Or maybe we get a Kings Landing series with the group that was left there. Plus there’s Sophie Tuner’s Sansa Stark who is now Queen of the North, just a hop, skip, and jump from Castle Black. There are nearly endless possibilities if this is the direction HBO is going with the franchise. We are sure to get more word about Kit Harrington in this planned Jon Snow series sooner than later.
