Tune up your pianos and practice your vocal warmups, Apple TV+ has announced their plans to renew the hit series Schmigadoon! for a second season. That means the return of your favorite whacky and musically inclined characters is just around the corner. Returning to the show’s second season will be stars Cecily Strong and Keegan-Michael Key, along with an ensemble cast that includes Ariana DeBose, Dove Cameron, Jaime Camil, Kristin Chenoweth, Alan Cumming, Ann Harada, Jane Krakowski, Martin Short and Aaron Tveit. This time, even more big names in the song and acting biz will be joining the fun with Tituss Burgess and Patrick Page signing their names onto the call sheet.
The first season centered around two revered New York doctors, Melissa (Cecily Strong) and Josh (Keegan-Michael Key), who set off on the backpacking trip of a lifetime in hopes of reconnecting their deeply troubled relationship. Weighed down by not only the contents of their packs, but also the bickering that comes with the travels of a miserable couple, the two soon become lost in the wilderness. All hope seems lost, until they happen upon a town called Schmigadoon that’s stuck in the Golden Age-style of musicals – meaning everyone has a song and dance not only in their hearts but in every conversation. Troubled by their findings, things get even more sticky for the unhappy couple when they come to realize that they can’t leave their new surroundings until they find true love.
The Cecily Strong and Keegan-Michael Key led series was created by Cinco Paul and Ken Daurio. Showrunner and songwriter Paul said that he’s had the idea for the story for over 20 years. He was inspired by Broadway musicals of yesteryear and thought it would be amusing to reimagine films like An American Werewolf in London, but with a musical twist. Instead of the backpackers finding gore and horror on their way, they instead find something much more sinister – a singing town! If you’re familiar with Broadway musicals, you’ll have already realized that the show’s title is a play on the 1947 hit production, Brigadoon. The show’s first season earned an AFI Award along with high praise from critics and a drive up in viewership for its home streaming network. Schmigadoon! joins a long list of other Apple TV+ original series that have nabbed second season renewals including Severance, Pachinko, The Afterparty, and Slow Horses.
As for Keegan-Michael Key, he has another project just on the horizon with his longtime collaborator, Jordan Peele titled Wendell & Wild. Unlike anything either performer has done, the Netflix comedy horror flick will see the two starring as demons living inside of a boombox. The extra twist? It’s a stop-motion animated feature created by none other than the legendary Henry Selick. Fans of the stop-motion genre will know Selick from his work on features including The Nightmare Before Christmas and Coraline, the latter of the two being his last big project until now. With no exact release date, we do know that Wendell & Wild is eying a drop in October 2022.
For now, we’re sure that Keegan-Michael Key, Cecily Strong, and the rest of the cast of Schmigadoon! are singing the praises of Apple TV+ and their audiences. We can’t wait to see what happens next for not only the starring couple, but also the other characters who call the tiny musical town home. As of right now, there is no release date for the show’s second season.
