2013’s The Last of Us is one of Sony’s universally acclaimed exclusives, whose incredible ratings among the critics and audience led to the PlayStation 4 remaster, which ranked even higher, warranting a PlayStation 5 remake, which is finally happening. Not only that, but given Sony’s recent plans to pull the plug on PS4 releases by 2025, it seems The Last of Us remake is finally coming to PC as well.

According to IGN, Naughty Dog’s Neil Druckmann officially announced The Last of Us Part I remake at Summer Game Fest, following Sony’s accidental leak on their own PlayStation Direct site. The listing was initially picked up by ResetEra staff, and while it was subsequently removed, the leak confirms the PS5 remake of The Last of Us Part I and reveals its release date of September 2. But the good news doesn’t end there since the leak also reveals that the PC version is in development.

Bringing Joel and Ellie’s adventure to the PC is reflective of Sony’s dedication to bringing its exclusives to the PC, which is nothing more than an expansion of its market for profit’s sake — the one that’s warmheartedly greeted by the PC gamers. However, considering that Naughty Dog is developing The Last of Us remake for the latest generation of hardware, it likely won’t see the same upgrades as God of War and Horizon: Zero Dawn — both of which have sharper graphics on the PC.

The leaked listing brands The Last of Us remake as a total overhaul of the original game that incorporates modernized graphics, improved controls, and enhanced exploration and combat elements, which is basically everything you would expect from a remake of a 2013’s gaming title. As per IGN’s report, the game will seemingly be sold in both standard and Firefly Edition — the latter of which includes the same content as the Digital Deluxe Edition but adds a limited edition SteelBook case.

Naughty Dog’s team confirmed the news at the Summer Game Fest 2022 and even brought up several details about the upcoming HBO series, featuring The Mandalorian’s lead, Pedro Pascal. Additionally, there was some talk about the previously mentioned standalone multiplayer for The Last of Us, but the company hasn’t revealed anything substantial and worth reporting besides the fact that the multiplayer is in development.

Given the sheer popularity of The Last of Us, as the fifth best-selling PlayStation 3 and third best-selling PlayStation 4 video game, we would expect Sony to deliver the remake sooner. However, as per our previous report, the game switched hands between Naughty Dog and VASG before returning to Naughty Dog over VASG’s budget constraints and disagreements with Sony. Luckily, the development of one of the gaming world’s biggest hits was continued uninterruptedly.

The original game was released in 2013 and quickly reached critical acclaim, scoring 10/1o among the critics and audiences, especially over the character development, story and subtext, visual and sound design, and depiction of female and LGBT characters. It’s considered one of the most significant seventh-generation video games and has been included among the greatest video games of all time. With the PS5 remake, The Last of Us is set to become the second game to span three generations of gaming hardware, with Grand Theft Auto V being the first.
