One of the most popular shows that HBO has ever seen is Sex and the City. The Sarah Jessica Parker-led dramedy conquered television for quite some time. Now there is a revival and spinoff called And Just Like That, which has been dominating television as well. One of the most famous stars from the show, apart from Parker, is Cynthia Nixon. Nixon recently revealed a revelation that her character Miranda Hobbes has “always been queer.” The idea of the revival was to slowly work Miranda into coming out, but Nixon claims she always had “lesbianistic qualities.” According to Nixon, “Even though she was only really interested in men, I think that Miranda had many other queer and frankly, lesbianic qualities about her.”
Nixon is also gay. She came out in 2004 and has been married to Christine Marinoni since 2012. The idea behind Miranda coming out in the show is likely to allow Nixon to accurately represent herself in the series, which is a fantastic idea. Also, Sex and the City has been about these women traversing their sexual lives and attempting to find love, so why not accurately represent what life is and mix things up. Not everyone is going to have the standard heterosexual lifestyle. In that regard, when Nixon had been asked about making Miranda come out, she said, “If we’re trying to do different stuff, and show different worlds, and show different aspects of these characters, why not do that?” To the above point, that is exactly what needs to happen to bring a new fresh take on characters that have been the same for years on end. A good mark of storytelling is to have characters change drastically by the end of their journey.
Another interesting thing of note is that Cynthia Nixon also revealed that she believes that Samantha (Kim Cattrall) was always queer as well. She did date a lesbian painter by the name of Maria in Sex and the City Season 4. Miranda, however, was going to come out in the story, and that is exactly what happened. The character would end up falling in love with her professor in the new reboot series, Che. This relationship would lead to Miranda leaving her husband Steve, and to creating another dynamic layer for the character.
And Just Like That was meant to be a miniseries, or a continuation of sorts for the characters from Sex and the City, but as of March, the new show has been renewed for a second season. It appears as if there is far more story to be told with Samantha, Miranda, and Charlotte. Especially now that Miranda has a new lease on life in terms of living her truest self.
Sex and the City evolved into And Just Like That, and now the characters are evolving to match the journey that the show has taken as well. It’s good to shake things up, and for long time fans of the series, it appears that are now going to be given much more to talk about. There is not a governing time table on the second season of the spinoff series, but there is hope it will come out sometime in mid-2023.
