Comedy-sketch-show extraordinaire turned prolific filmmaker Jordan Peele has gotten into the nasty habit of scaring the bejeezus out of people in movie theatres. First was his Oscar-winning debut feature Get Out, which he followed up with the spine-tingling Us. In the new trailer for Jordan Peele’s Nope, The Hollywood Reporter dives into the latest details Jordan Peele has offered audiences in the build-up to the film’s release on July 22 this year.
The previous trailer for Jordan Peele’s Nope appeared to be deliberately sketchy in providing information. However, it did offer a glimpse at Get Out star Daniel Kaluuya and actress Keke Palmer as a brother and sister duo, whose ranch appears under threat by a sinister force hanging above the clouds. The prevailing theory was that the adversaries in Jordan Peele’s Nope are aliens and the latest trailer, which you can see below, appears to confirm those suspicions.
Throughout the over three-minute-long trailer for Jordan Peele’s Nope, Daniel Kaluuya’s Oj Haywood and Keke Palmer’s Emerald Haywood frequently mention aliens and appear determined to catch one on film, enlisting the help of security camera installer Angel Torres (Brandon Perea) and filmmaker Antlers Holst (Michael Wincott). The trailer also heavily features Steven Yeun’s character Ricky ‘Jupe’ Park. If the constant mention of aliens isn’t enough to convince audiences that they are indeed the main foes in the movie, the end of the trailer shows a shot of a gloriously classic-looking UFO.
Kaluuya and Palmer’s characters start their mission when they believe their father’s death to be connected to aliens lurking in the clouds above their ranch, which they run to train Horses for Hollywood productions. However, given that Jordan Peele’s Nope is the follow-up to Get Out and Us, even the details offered up in the latest trailer should be taken with a pinch of salt, given Peele’s affinity toward bending tropes and having a surprise up his sleeve. The film’s stars have also remained tight-lipped regarding details of the film, with Keke Palmer keen to avoid divulging much about the narrative of the movie when pressed by Entertainment Weekly in the early weeks of May. Instead, Palmer goes on to say how the film will feel familiar to Jordan Peele fans: “The film itself is what Jordan usually does: a commentary on something grander. It uses the horror genre as a way to [examine] what we are all running from, or what we all get so totally obsessed with, how it defines us, how it brings us to the edge.”
Given the success of both Get Out and Us, the hype for Jordan Peele’s Nope will likely go into overdrive thanks to the latest trailer. The film looks set to be an intriguing genre mash-up of both horror and science-fiction and it will have all the trappings of a Peele feature, so it will likely be a big box office draw upon its theatrical release toward the end of July. Back in April, the marketing team behind Nope sought to push the film’s hype train along a little further with a delightful ad featuring NBA superstar Steph Curry, where the three-point shooting legend can be seen hooping solo in a barn before a mysterious gust of wind whisks his ball up into the air. At this point, Curry spins round, flicks his hood up, and says “Nope.” Unlike Curry, it looks as if audiences will be saying yes when it comes to being offered the chance to see the intriguing film in cinemas this summer.
