When the character of Saul Goodman first graced the small screen in Breaking Bad over a decade ago, fans of the long-running series hoped to see more of the Albuquerque-based criminal lawyer someday. Actor Bob Odenkirk brought the character to a prequel series entitled Better Call Saul, which is soon going to air the second part of its sixth and final season on AMC. However, as SlashFilm reported earlier this year, a Better Call Saul prequel has been in the works, and now the first full episode has just premiered.
The Better Call Saul prequel is an animated spin-off of the series called Slippin’ Jimmy. When viewers tuned in to watch Saul Goodman on the prequel series Better Call Saul, it was revealed that Saul actually used to go by the name of Jimmy McGill before the events of Breaking Bad, as he was a con artist before becoming a criminal defense attorney. The first full episode of Slippin’ Jimmy is available to audiences via YouTube, and the remaining five episodes are set to debut between now and the premiere of Part 2 of season six of Better Caul Saul on July 11, 2022.
Slippin’ Jimmy is not simply just a Better Call Saul prequel, as it can be viewed as an animated series that stands alone. As audiences have fallen in love over the years with the imperfect personality of Jimmy McGill, Slippin’ Jimmy takes fans on a ride in the first episode titled “After Bedtime”. The episode shows Jimmy and longtime friend Marco Pasternak as young con artists, sneaking out of the house to attempt to steal a comic book called Lady Labyrinth from a local comic book store. While not intended to be as dark and dastardly as Breaking Bad and Better Call Saul became, Slippin’ Jimmy is going to serve as a placeholder before the latter goes off the air permanently.
While not the first time creator Vince McGill has spun off his original creation of Breaking Bad, this new Better Call Saul prequel brings back some familiar faces while hoping to strengthen the characters’ personalities that fans have grown to have a love/hate relationship with. Just as it was done with the 2019 film El Camino, the exploration of the characters of the Breaking Bad franchise has been a focal point for the unbelievably great writing presented to audiences. Written by Better Call Saul writers Kathleen Williams-Foshee and Ariel Levine, Slippin’ Jimmy may be a fun look at the origins of Breaking Bad’s criminal masterminds as told in the vein of 70s-era cartoons. Each episode will be honoring a movie genre, from spaghetti westerns to The Exorcist.
In addition to the Better Call Saul prequel of Slippin’ Jimmy, Variety reports that AMC will debut two other short-form series that are related to the Breaking Bad franchise. These will be Cooper’s Bar featuring Better Call Saul’s Rhea Seehorn and audiences will also be able to see new episodes of the series Better Call Saul Employee Training Video. Slippin’ Jimmy is set to have Chi McBride, Laraine Newman, and Sean Giambrone as part of its voice cast.
