Obi-Wan Kenobi is already a smash hit for Disney. The return of Ewan McGregor playing everyone’s favorite Jedi Master has recently broken the Disney+ record for the most-watched premiere on the platform to date, based on hours streamed in an opening weekend. This announcement comes to us from the official Star Wars Twitter account. check out the Tweet below:
Unfortunately, Disney+ doesn’t make these streaming numbers readily available to the public, but there’s little doubt that these numbers are huge. As one of the most popular franchises on the planet, any Star Wars property is bound to get the fans to watch in droves. It’s not like Obi-Wan Kenobi doesn’t have stiff competition to become the most-watched Disney+ Original premiere. Disney+ has shows from one of the other most popular franchises in the world — the Marvel Cinematic Universe. This means Obi-Wan Kenobi would have to beat out shows like Loki, WandaVision, Moon Knight, and even fellow Star Wars property The Mandalorian to take the crown.
It’s very likely that the second season of The Mandalorian might have held this honor before Obi-Wan Kenobi premiered. The first season was incredibly popular and then the second season already had the hype from the first, plus the build-in Star Wars audience. Loki could have certainly been a contender as it featured a hugely popular MCU character in his own series. It’s impressive that Obi-Wan Kenobi was able to beat out the second season of The Mandalorian since it’s a brand new series. Undoubtedly, the hype to see the return of Obi-Wan and Darth Vader contributed to pumping up the streaming numbers. The Mandalorian may have had the benefit of a built-in general Star Wars audience, but it was an original concept. Obi-Wan Kenobi has the benefit of having characters from the prequel trilogy and the original Star Wars trilogy. Still, The Mandalorian Season 3 has the chance to take the crown for itself when it hits Disney+ in February of 2023.
This will likely be the only season of Obi-Wan Kenobi, as it’s billed as a limited series. The series will give us a look at a significant event in Obi-Wan’s life between the events of Star Wars: Episode III – Revenge of the Sith and Star Wars: Episode IV A New Hope. It takes place a decade after the former and sees Ewan McGregor reprising the role of Obi-Wan Kenobi, now going by Ben, as he watches over Luke Skywalker on Tattoine. An event causes Obi-Wan to come out of hiding and puts him in the crosshairs of the Inquisitors, an elite squad of Jedi hunters conscripted by the villainous Sith Lord and former pupil of Obi-Wan, Darth Vader.
Obi-Wan Kenobi stars Ewan McGregor, Hayden Christensen, Moses Ingram, Vivien Lyra Blair, Sung Kang, Rupert Friend, Kumail Nanjiani, Joel Edgerton, Bonnie Piesse, Simone Kessell, Benny Safdie, James Earl Jones, and more. Deborah Chow directs the script by Joby Harold. There are currently three episodes available to stream on Disney+ with three more episodes to come.
