The six-week-long defamation trial between Johnny Depp and Amber Heard has finally concluded, and the jury sided with Depp in the sum of $15 million dollars. The jury found Heard to have essentially lied about what she had been put through as part of malice against the actor. The jury found all counts of Heard posting the op-ed piece was her way of posting defamatory remarks to get Depp to lose out on his biggest franchises. With the trial ending and Depp being in England at the time of the verdict, he has posted his response to the huge win. You can see it below:
Throughout his testimony and the word of his legal counsel, Johnny Depp has always claimed his innocence. Through his lengthy post about the trial, he thanked the jurors, his lawyers, the judge, and the world for their undying support through this entire ordeal. Depp had exclaimed in court how these malicious claims against him had affected himself, his children, and the rest of his family. Depp’s lawyers through the entire process were Camille Vasquez and Benjamin Chew. Both addressed the media after the win at the courthouse in Virginia. You can see their responses below:
One of the biggest quotes from Chew was about “turning the page and looking toward the future.” Both Johnny Depp and Amber Heard claimed that they would move on from this lawsuit, despite the outcome. There had been rumblings that both would also seek an appeal should they lose the case. Heard’s team has lost the trial, though one count of defamation went in her favor to the sum of $2 million to be paid by Depp. It will likely take some time to find out if her legal team plans to chase an appeal. But for now, Depp is the clear winner of this defamation lawsuit.
Johnny Depp winning the trial also poses an interesting question about his availability for the Pirates of the Caribbean reboot franchise. Although he claimed in court that he wouldn’t return, even for $300 million, things might look better now for the man. Jerry Bruckheimer, the producer of the franchise, voiced his support for the actor, and was all but coy about if Disney would allow the man to return should he win his case. That certainly happened today with Depp winning his case outright, so maybe the media giant might feel different about asking him to return to his most iconic character.
Johnny Depp had been fired from Fantastic Beasts and was all but removed from the idea of returning to the Pirates of the Caribbean franchise, which was the basis of his defamation case. Now that he has won that case against Amber Heard, the actor’s luck might change in the form of landing high-profile acting parts again. What better way than his return to the incomparable Captain Jack Sparrow. That is just speculation, as Depp might still be used that Disney did not have his back during this entire ordeal, but the man does play that character well. We will see what happens, but for now, he gets to enjoy this huge win.
