Besides announcing the new Poke Balls for Pokemon Home, a cloud service that allows gamers to transfer Pokemon between compatible games and devices, The Pokemon Company offers a glimpse into two upcoming video game entries in the Pokemon gaming franchise — Pokemon Scarlet and Pokemon Violet. The new trailer dropped earlier today and shows off the new Pokemon, the open-world games’ new region, and its release date. You can watch the trailer below:
According to Polygon, both Pokemon Scarlet and Pokemon Violet will launch on November 18 this year on Nintendo Switch, a handheld console whose price finally dropped five years after the initial launch. Both games are announced today and feature new and still unnamed regions in the game as catching ground for players to catch Pokemon. The trailer also introduced some never-before-seen Pokemon, including the newly revealed Lechonk, Smoliv, and Pawmi.
Game Freak, the developer, implemented multiplayer gameplay in Pokemon Scarlet and Violet, allowing up to four players to trade and battle Pokemon and explore the new upcoming regions together. Both games were announced earlier this year, revealing the new locations and new generation of Pokemon, especially started ones, like Sprigatitio — a small, attention-seeking Grass Cat Pokemon. There’s also Fuecoco, a laid-back Fire type that likes to do stuff at its own pace, and Quaxly, a duckling Pokemon.
This is the first big news about the upcoming games since their announcement, considering that The Pokemon Company went silent and hasn’t offered any insight about the upcoming releases. As per our previous report, the upcoming games will feature at least 50 Pokemon, including the previously mentioned starter Pokemon. The open-world setting most certainly isn’t a novelty in the Pokemon franchise, as is the case with the upcoming Sonic Frontiers, but Pokemon Scarlet and Violet do offer a new take on the open world.
It’s said that the in-game towns for Pokemon Scarlet won’t have borders but will instead seemingly blend in with the environment, with Pokemon, both tame and wild, roaming around — just like in Arceus, released January 28. Apparently, Game Freak recognized the value and gamers’ demand for more open-world Pokemon games and decided to fully embrace the concept. Kudos, where kudos are due. And while this is all great, there are some questions the fandom would like answered.
For example, we still don’t know the exact difference between Pokemon Scarlet and Violet, except for the fact that the game’s Trainer (the player’s character) will look different in both. The spiritual predecessors to these titles, 1996’s Pokemon Red and Pokemon Blue, featured notable distinctions between the available Pokemon in the game and different prices for the same Poke companion (you could buy them with coins). Those distinctions would be nice in the upcoming games, just to circumvent the difference in Trainers being the only benefit of owning both games.
The fans of the franchise would also like to know whether these games would be compatible with Pokemon Home and to what extent? It’s a bit strange to have two more Pokemon releases within a year in which the franchise offered so much, but we won’t argue with Nintendo — we actually welcome the company’s decision to release more titles. So, look out for both Pokemon Scarlet and Violet as they release on November 16.
