Fans of Quentin Tarantino know that, when it comes to the director’s work on the big screen, there might not be that many installments left. By the famed film icon’s own admission, he’s going to make ten films and that’s about it for him with movies. Sure, there’s some somewhat creative accounting with how that gets done, but alas, it doesn’t seem like he has too many more movies in him. But Quentin Tarantino has been working on other projects and he’s got another big release coming this fall, something just recently announced.
According to a report from IndieWire (via Collider), Quentin Tarantino has a book release coming to shelves this fall titled Cinema Speculation. It looks like it is going to cover a lot of ground both from a historical perspective, but also a personal one as well. The book, being published by Harper Collins, will dive into films of the 1970s and will have aspects of film criticism, history, theory, and Tarantino’s own spin on them especially when it came to him viewing them as a younger man. From the description it almost feels like Cinema Speculation will be partly a memoir around how Tarantino became so fascinated with movies while also critiquing, poking, and prodding at the finer details of cinema. Frankly, he feels like about the perfect person to dive into such a thing.
The personal history of Quentin Tarantino, especially where filmmaking is concerned, has been well documented throughout his career, moving from behind the video store counter to behind the lens in only a matter of a few short years in the 1980s. But along the way he’d been cultivating a nearly photographic memory and recall around what he’d seen in films, helping some of that historical expertise inform the makings of his own movies. It’s given the director a decidedly unique style and now it looks like he’ll let folks behind the curtain some with this newest book.
Quentin Tarantino writing and publishing Cinema Speculation does follow the release of another book that hit shelves last year. That was the novelization of his movie Once Upon a Time in Hollywood. He adapted the script he wrote for that movie into book form and it was generally well-received. There’s a chance this latest book has an even broader appeal than the novelization considering it hits a much larger swatch of the industry and also should give insight into the director himself.
As for his movie-making ventures, well the aforementioned Once Upon a Time in Hollywood was the last time he’s been in the director’s chair and that movie came out all the way back in 2019. There’s been talk of him directing an episode of the Justified revival, but that’s fallen through. He’s said that it would be 10 movies and he’d call it quits. He’s done nine so far (he counts the Kill Bills as one movie) so we could be rounding towards the finish line on his career. But it isn’t set in stone just yet. For now, we’ll have to enjoy the books.
