Following his triumphant return to acting in Top Gun: Maverick, Val Kilmer is heading to Disney+ where he will have a presence in the Willow reboot. The news was revealed by the series star, Warwick Davis and executive producer Jonathan Kasdan during Star Wars Celebration events in Anaheim, California. “Val’s a huge part of this, and the first conversation I had, when Warwick and I got the green light to do this, was with Val,” Kasdan told Yahoo Entertainment. “We wanted his character to be a part of the story. We wanted him to be in the show.”
Val Kilmer, who was not featured in the trailer for Willow, portrayed heroic swordsman Madmartigan in the 1988 movie. And fans have been wondering if he will be back for the series since his character was instrumental in helping Willow Ufgood protect the baby girl prophesized to end the rule of the evil Queen Bavmorda. While the 62-year-old was unable to film with the show (due to his ongoing battle with throat cancer) Kasdan promised that he’s involved in a big way.
Speaking to the Star Wars crowd, Kasdan said Val Kilmer had been in communication with Joann Whalley and the creative team throughout the production process. He also assured fans that Madmartigan is a major figure in the story even though they didn’t get to shoot with him in season one. Recalling working together on the movie, Davis also described his former co-star as a terrific guy, adding that his spirit is very much with the series. “I still attribute me getting through the film to Val. He kept my spirits up when conditions were really treacherous and difficult,’ he said via Comic Book.
Disney+ released the first trailer for the Willow reboot last week. The series is described as an epic period fantasy, with a modern sensibility. Set 20 years after the Val Kilmer movie, the story takes place in an enchanted land of breathtaking beauty. There, the movie’s adventure continues as an unlikely group of heroes set off on a perilous quest to help a princess save her twin brother. Along the way, the group must face their inner demons and come together to save their magical world.
The Willow series hails from the creative mind of Jonathan Kasdan, who wrote the pilot and serves as showrunner alongside Wendy Mericle. Stephen Woolfenden directed the first two episodes. While Ron Howard, writer Bob Dolman, Kathleen Kennedy, and Michelle Rejwan serve as executive producers on the project. Along with returning cast members like Val Kilmer, the series will introduce new characters to the magical world of fairies and Eborsisk monsters.
Joining Warwick Davis and Joanne Whalley in the mystical world are Ruby Cruz, Erin Kellyman, Ellie Bamber, Tony Revolori, Amar Chadha Patel, and Dempsey Bryk. The highly anticipated Willow reboot will be available to stream exclusively on Disney+ on November 30th. Meanwhile, Val Kilmer fans can see the actor as Tom “Iceman” Kazansky in a touching cameo alongside Tom Cruise’s Pete “Maverick” Mitchell in Top Gun: Maverick.
That film is directed by Joseph Kosinski from a script by Ehren Kruger, Eric Warren Singer, and Christopher McQuarrie. Set 36 years after the events of the original, the story follows Maverick, who spends his days doing what he loves as a test pilot. His choices eventually take him back to the United States Navy Strike Fighter Tactics Instructor program, where he first encountered Tom “Iceman” Kazansky (Val Kilmer) all those years ago. Top Gun: Maverick is currently playing in cinemas everywhere.
