Henry Cavill is a very busy man. Although his status as the current DCEU Clark Kent is very much in question, he has a lot of other projects lined up. He will be appearing in Matthew Vaughn’s upcoming ensemble spy thriller Argyle with Dave Bautista, Bryce Dallas Howard, Sam Rockwell, and Samuel L. Jackson (fulfilling his annual quota of appearing in all movies produced in a year), Netflix’s sequel to the Millie Bobby Brown star vehicle Enola Holmes (in which he plays the most yoked version of Sherlock Holmes), and of course, his ongoing, incredibly popular fantasy series The Witcher. And now, according to our trusted and proven sources, Henry Cavill is in talks to star in Hobbs & Shaw 2.
Hobbs & Shaw (or Fast & Furious Presents: Hobbs & Shaw, if you’re nasty) was released in 2019 and made $760 million at the box office. That pretty much guaranteed a sequel, even if star Dwayne Johnson was not always sniffing around for a franchise. Henry Cavill is currently at the height of his drawing power as a star, so it is not surprising that the Fast and Furious producers would try to bring him in. He is also a walking slab of muscle, so it would make sense to put him on screen at the same time as Johnson and co-star Jason Statham.
The Fast and Furious producers may also have noted Henry Cavill’s starring role in 2018’s Mission: Impossible – Fallout, in which he famously took time to reload his fists. It was the kind of goofy, immediately iconic action movie moment that the Fast and Furious is always striving for. While Henry Cavill may have first come to public attention playing a 16th-century British lord in Showtime’s The Tudors, he was pretty much always intended to be some kind of action star.
It feels like that if Henry Cavill is being pursued to appear in Hobbs & Shaw 2 that the Fast and Furious spinoff is likely looking for its next antagonist. In the first film, Idris Elba fit nicely into the extremely heightened world of the Torettos (it’s Dom’s world, they’re just living in it) as a British supersoldier enhanced with both genetic engineering and cybernetics. Hobbs & Shaw went just a few steps further than the Fast and Furious in terms of remote believability, so they could probably use a man who can fly.
Whether or not Henry Cavill joins Hobbs & Shaw 2, it is definitely going to help. Reportedly, Dwayne Johson has an original idea for a sequel, which he described as “the antithesis of…Fast & Furious movies…” which sets everyone up for a lot of puns. As of last fall, the movie is in active development and pretty much just has to work around the many other projects that both Dwayne Johnson and Henry Cavill constantly have going. And probably Jason Statham too, don’t forget him.
