Critics had the chance to see Ms. Marvel before its official release on Disney+ and their reactions are mostly full of praise. Some common themes in the reviews include Iman Vellani nailing her performance as Khamala Khan, the appreciation of the depiction of being Muslim and Pakistani in America, and the pleasant coming-of-age/slice of life nature of the show. Let’s take a look at some of the reactions:

The above reviewer also compared Ms. Marvel to Spider-Man: Homecoming, which showed us Peter Parker balancing his life as a superhero with his high school obligations. Other reviewers have noted how alive the city feels, along with depicting everyday life in the MCU. This reviewer was also quick to praise Iman Vellani’s performance. Check out the Tweet below:

Some interesting takes on the new show include the depiction of Khamala Khan’s powers. In the comics, Khamala can extend her limbs and even shapeshift or change her appearance. However, in the MCU show, she uses purple energy constructs, which is a drastic departure as far as power-sets go. According to this reviewer, the CGI on the power change looks great, which might make it a little easier to swallow for diehard Ms. Marvel fans:

Other reviewers talk about how well the Ms. Marvel show nails the coming-of-age story beats. While reviewers note that the show is aimed at a little bit of a younger audience, it still has plenty to like for older audiences who want to check it out. See some more reviews for the show below:

Ms. Marvel is our MCU introduction to the Khamala Khan, who is an Avengers-obsessed fangirl, with a particular admiration for Captain Marvel/Carol Danvers, who gets superpowers of her own. The show is created by Bisha K. Ali and stars Iman Vellani as Khamala Khan. The show also stars Alysia Reiner, Matt Lintz, Yasmeen Fletcher, Anjali Bhimani, Farhan Akhtar, Rish Shah, Zenobia Shroff, Laurel Marsden, Nimra Bucha, and more.

The Disney+ series will give us time to learn more about Ms. Marvel and her superhero life before she appears in her first big MCU movie with The Marvels. The Marvels will be a sequel to Captain Marvel, with Brie Larson and Samuel L. Jackson both returning to reprise their roles. Teyonah Parris will also be returning as Monica Rambeau, who we met as a child in Captain Marvel and as an adult in WandaVision. The Marvels is directed by Nia DaCosta and is set to hit theaters in the summer of 2023.

The MCU shows no signs of slowing down, so you can rest assured that there will be plenty more superhero projects to keep you busy for the rest of 2022 and beyond. Ms. Marvel marks the mid-way point for MCU projects in 2022. With Moon Knight and Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness both in the books, all that’s left is Thor: Love and Thunder in July, She-Hulk: Attorney at Law in August, Black Panther: Wakanda Forever in November, and The Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special rounding out the year.
