Despite leaks and dedicated fans picking apart every frame of their trailers, Marvel does its best to keep the storylines in their movies a secret. Apparently, this even extends to the audition process in some cases. Will Poulter was recently announced to be playing the role of Adam Warlock in Guardians of the Galaxy 3, but he had no idea going into it. You’ve got to hand it to Marvel, they sure are dedicated to maintaining a certain level of secrecy.

Will Poulter revealed this little tidbit about Marvel’s casting podcast to The Playlist, saying that he first auditioned in June of last year and that he initially didn’t know what role he was going out for, just that it was going to be for Guardians of the Galaxy 3. Adam Warlock has long been anticipated in the MCU, and many fans thought he would appear in the second Guardians of the Galaxy film, or that he would maybe appear to help against Thanos in the recent Avengers films. We did see his cocoon in the Collector’s vault in the first Guardians of the Galaxy, and then it was revealed that it was indeed Adam Warlock in the post-credits scene for the second movie. Since you only saw Warlock’s cocoon, it allowed Marvel to have plenty of time to cast the perfect actor for the role. While many fan castings hadn’t even considered Will Poulter, his recent physical transformation has plenty of fans on board and putting their trust in Marvel.

While Guardians of the Galaxy 3 will be Will Poulter’s MCU debut, it will be the final bow for director James Gunn. While Gunn was initially fired from the franchise, he was brought back on to complete the story he started in the first, critically, and commercially acclaimed Guardians of the Galaxy. James Gunn also has The Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special coming out this year, which will precede the third movie. While Gunn is exiting the MCU, it looks like he’ll be plenty busy on the other side of the comic-book aisle working for DC. After The Suicide Squad, he released Peacemaker, which was near-universally praised. Peacemaker was greenlit for another season and Gunn is working on another Suicide Squad spin-off based on Amanda Waller.

Will Poulter most recently appeared in the 2022 TV mini-series Why Didn’t They Ask Evans? which ran for three episodes. The show also starred Lucy Boynton, Maeve Dermody, Daniel Ings, Jonathan Jules, and more. Guardians of the Galaxy 3 will be the next project we see from Poulter, so we’ll have to wait until May of 2023 to see him in another big role. Guardians of the Galaxy 3 will see many of the main cast return, including Chris Pratt, Zoe Saldana, Dave Bautista, Vin Diesel, Bradley Cooper, Karen Gillan, Pom Klementieff, Sylvester Stallone, Sean Gunn, and Elizabeth Debicki. If you want to catch the most recent entry to the MCU, you can still see Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness in theaters.
