Mad Max Prequel Furiosa Bringing Back One Of Fury Road’s Best Creators
Furiosa just got some good company!
Mad Max: Fury Road brought back the franchise in an exciting and bombastic fashion, thanks in no small part to the score by composer Tom Holkenborg, aka Junkie XL. With the prequel Mad Max Furiosa on the horizon, many fans are hoping that a lot of the same creators would return to help recapture that magic. Now Holkenborg is officially on board, as George Miller recently announced the news at a Cannes screening for his new film.
George Miller’s Three Thousand Years of Longing, which stars Idris Elba and Tilda Swinton, made its debut at the Cannes Film Festival. Holkenborg also worked on the score for that film, though he had to miss the premiere. The addition of Holkenborg is definitely a win for Mad Max Furiosa, and the movie really seems to be coming together. Holkenborg has worked on quite a few blockbusters in recent years, with Sonic the Hedgehog 2 being the most recent. He also worked on the first Sonic. Some other notable films on his resume other than Mad Max: Fury Road and the Sonic films include Justice League, Alita Battle Angel, Deadpool, Godzilla vs Kong, and Tomb Raider.
We first met Furiosa in Mad Max: Fury Road as the escaped lieutenant of the despot Immortan Joe. Furiosa helps Joe’s five wives with the help of Max. Fury Road was a soft reboot of the famous franchise, with Tom Hardy taking over the Max role from Mel Gibson. Charlize Theron played Furiosa, but she will not be reprising the role in Mad Max Furiosa. Since it’s a prequel, Furiosa will be younger in this movie and will be played by Anya Taylor-Joy instead. Even if Furiosa was the same age, it doesn’t seem too likely that Charlize Theron would return to the franchise after the filming difficulties she faced during Mad Max: Fury Road.
There aren’t a ton of details about Mad Max Furiosa, so any news is welcomed. We know that it’s a prequel about Furiosa and we know Anya Taylor-Joy is in the lead role. We also know that Chris Hemsworth, Yahya Abdul-Mateen II, Nathan Jones, and Tom Burke are on the cast list. George Miller will be returning to direct and co-writes the script with Nick Lathouris. Miller is also on as a producer with Doug Mitchell and Warner Bros Pictures. Presumably, we’ll see the origins of Furiosa and how she became the fierce warrior we saw in Mad Max: Fury Road. Maybe we’ll see how she came to be in the employ of Immortan Joe too. Hardy is also signed on for three more movies in the Mad Max franchise, but it remains to be seen if Mad Max Furiosa will be one of them.
Mad Max Furiosa is set to be released in May of 2024, so we have a little while to wait. There is also apparently a sequel to Fury Road in the works with the working title Mad Max: The Wasteland. Any new Mad Max is welcome, so we’ll just have to wait patiently for what George Miller gives us next.
