Thor: Love and Thunder trailer

Ever since the spectacle and hilarity that was Thor: Ragnarok hit the big screen, fans knew that the pivot Marvel (and Taika Waititi) had pulled off this character was a total win. That flick reset the tone for Chris Hemsworth as Thor and this next movie Love and Thunder looks like it’s set to capitalize on the same principles. Part of that is going to be possibly culminating (or starting to close) the Thor arc while also bringing on some new characters into the MCU. One of the latter is going to be the addition of Christian Bale to the mix with the famed actor coming on as a villain in this universe. He’s taking on the Gorr the God Butcher role, seeking to do just what his name suggests.

In the latest Thor: Love and Thunder trailer we got extended looks at a number of new or returning characters for Marvel with a clearer sense of how Christian Bale was going to work into the mix. It looks like not only is he going to play the movie’s primary antagonist, but will offer quite the challenge for Thor. Gorr has made it a point to take out the Gods one after the other and now he’s got his eyes set on Thor. Bale’s look invokes a number of other villains we’ve seen in major franchises before, and there is a foreboding sense of creepy evil with the way they’ve portrayed the character. Check out the first look at Christian Bale as Gorr the God Butcher in the Thor: Love and Thunder trailer.

We’ve got quite the Voldemort vibe with Christian Bale as Gorr the God Butcher, a dude who is looking to pick the Gods off one-by-one. He hints at as much in his “talk” with Thor, saying that he’s been down this road before though Thor presents something of a different challenge.

In the comics, Gorr is aided by the Necrosword which helps him dispatch gods in the universe, a mission he’s created for himself. And he’s had success in this realm with the Thor story mirroring some of what we’ve seen in the pages of Marvel in the past. Bale’s ashen, though somewhat tribal look in the movie does portend evil, though there’s a chance that Marvel gives the character sufficient backstory to understand why he’s taken on this mission. It’s not all from a “bad” place.

Christian Bale isn’t the only major name coming on board in Thor: Love and Thunder will this trailer also giving a somewhat extended look at Russell Crowe’s Zeus character. Whether the God of Lightning and the God of Thunder have to eventually team up remains to be seen, though in the trailer we see that there’s some comedic effect here with Zeus “stripping” Thor in front of a gaggle of onlookers. Plus, we are treated to even more Natalie Portman who’s Jane Foster has taken over the Mighty Thor mantle for this film.

It won’t be long until we get to see the full scope of Christian Bale as Gorr the God Butcher because Thor: Love and Thunder is set to release in theaters on July 8th of this year. Then we’ll see what Thor is really up against.
