SPOILERS ahead for Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness:
Doctor Strange 2 had cameos and characters galore, but it seems like one of the major players could have been killed off early, if the rumor from Heavy Spoilers is to be believed. Apparently, we almost saw Wanda Maximoff/Scarlet Witch (Elizabeth Olsen) kill off \Mordo (Chiwetel Ejiofor) immediately in the opening scenes. This would have been quite a different opening from the one the movie has currently.
According to the rumor, the 616 version of Mordo — i.e. the one from the prime MCU timeline — would have gone to Scarlet Witch to help him on his quest to eliminate wizards and magic from the world. The scene would have seen Wanda killing Mordo within seconds of meeting him, beheading the rogue wizard. As it turns out, the 616 version doesn’t even show up in Doctor Strange 2. His death would make the reveal of Scarlet Witch as the film’s antagonist much less surprising, and she would have already started acting out of character before the film could even get rolling. Instead, we see Wanda go off the deep end against the Illuminati, a group that included Reed Richards, Professor X, Captain Carter, and more.
This scene would definitely line up with Mordo’s post-credits vow in the first Doctor Strange. However, since he wasn’t killed off immediately, this plotline can now develop in a different way. With Doctor Strange 2 being in theaters for a couple of weeks now, we’re getting more and more tidbits about what could have been, instead of what’s currently playing on screens. Another notable recent tidbit was the rumor that Daniel Craig was going to be in the movie portraying Reed Richards. Instead, we got the fan-favorite casting of John Krasinski as the Fantastic Four hero, but this would have been interesting nonetheless. We also recently learned that Benedict Cumberbatch was offered a much less significant role in the Marvel Cinematic Universe which he turned down. Luckily for us, he ended up accepting the Stephen Strange role instead.
Doctor Strange 2 has done well at the box office so far, despite the second-week drop it experienced in ticket sales. The movie pits Doctor Strange against Wanda Maximoff, who has been corrupted by the Darkhold. We also meet the hero America Chavez, played by Xochitl Gomez, who Wanda attempts to kidnap and use for her own ends. Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness is directed by Sam Raimi with a screenplay by Michael Waldron.
The MCU juggernaut is still going full steam ahead with no signs of slowing down. With Doctor Strange 2 now in theaters, fans are heading out in droves to keep up with the ongoing story. The next Marvel project we’ll get is Ms. Marvel, which is set to premiere on Disney+ on June 8. After that, we don’t have very long to wait for the next big-screen MCU entry with Thor: Love and Thunder hitting theaters on July 8.
