Maisie Williams was once one of the many stars of Game of Thrones as Arya Stark. Shortly after finishing her long run on that series, she also went on to star in what some might consider the worst Marvel movie out there with The New Mutants. But if you ask Maisie Williams about it, she’s apparently fine with that footnote. In a recent interview with GQ, she said “I can’t remember what publication it was, but someone said it was the worst Marvel movie ever made,” and then continued, “I still feel kinda proud of that!”

That’s definitely the kind of optimism you’d hope to see from an actor after a movie bombs. It was not Maisie Williams‘ fault by any means, so it’s good to see she’s not taking it too hard. The New Mutants faced numerous production delays and other difficulties that made the three-plus-year development of the Marvel movie a long and presumably grueling process.

The former star of Game of Thrones says that she has fond memories of shooting the movie, but other factors would go into the production’s troubles. The pandemic obviously had a big effect, as the movie was released in 2020. The Disney-Fox merger could have also played a part, as The New Mutants was an X-Men spin-off before Disney finally got their hands on the rights to the well-known Marvel mutants. Reportedly, there were creative tensions involved too. The movie ended up getting a 36% from critics on Rotten Tomatoes and a 56% from audiences. In addition to the Game of Thrones star, the movie also featured the talents of Anya Taylor-Joy, Charlie Heaton, Alice Braga, Henry Zaga, Blu Hunt, and more.

Unfortunately, Maisie Williams was probably used to negative reactions from audiences by the time The New Mutants came out. Despite being phenomenal for most of its run, Game of Thrones went out with a thud in its last season. The rushed story and character motivations were panned by critics and audiences alike. Again, not Maisie Williams’ fault. She played Arya Stark pitch-perfect from start to finish. The blame for the shoddy final season is often given to creators David Benioff and D.B. Weiss, who fans thought should have taken more time and done more episodes to make the story feel organic. It probably didn’t help that they had run out of George R.R. Martin books to adapt. Despite the negative reception of the last season, HBO still has a spinoff moving forward with House of the Dragon. That series will follow the Targaryen civil war 300 years before the event of Game of Thrones.

With Game of Thrones now well in Maisie Williams’ rearview, she’s focusing on other new projects. Her next show, Pistol, is just around the corner. Pistol is directed by Danny Boyle and explores the early days and origins of The Sex Pistols. Williams is playing Jordan, a model and punk pioneer who worked with Vivienne Westwood. The series also stars Dylan Llewellyn, Louis Partridge, Emma Appleton, Toby Wallace, Anson Boon, and more. You can catch it when it premiers on May 31.
