It looks like HBO Max is going all-in with its James Gunn-led DC properties. A spin-off of Peacemaker, which is itself a spin-off of Suicide Squad, is reportedly in the works with a story based around Amanda Waller (Viola Davis). James Gunn will be on as executive producer, so it looks like he’s going to continue making the DC TV universe a better place.
Viola Davis was featured prominently in both Suicide Squad and The Suicide Squad. If you’re confused, one was directed by David Ayer and was met with almost universal hate while the other was directed by James Gunn and was met with near-universal praise. James Gunn would carry this goodwill into the series Peacemaker which might be one of the best things about the current DC Cinematic Universe. Peacemaker surprised a lot of people by taking a very unsympathetic character from The Suicide Squad and imbuing him with pathos, humor, and an engaging storyline to boot.
This was all due in no small part to John Cena’s layered performance and James Gunn’s direction and writing. Peacemaker was so successful that the season finale brought them the biggest single-day audience for an Original HBO Max series yet. Naturally, Peacemaker was renewed for a second season with James Gunn still at the helm.
Amanda Waller may have been pulling a lot of the strings in Peacemaker, but we didn’t see Viola Davis on-screen very much at all. This spinoff series will bring her back into the spotlight. Amanda Waller is the director of A.R.G.U.S. and the brains behind the Suicide Squad, a group of convicted criminals who can shorten their sentences by going on near-suicidal missions. While there aren’t any plot details yet, presumably we’ll be seeing Waller conduct some more covert operations behind the scenes.
Also, James Gunn has previously stated that the second The Suicide Squad spin-off series he was working on would be less of a comedy than Peacemaker. This would make sense considering Amanda Waller’s character has been all business since we met her on-screen. No word yet on who else will star in the series, but it’s always possible we could see some crossover characters from Peacemaker, especially since Leota Adebayo is her daughter.
Viola Davis has been keeping busy lately. The Oscar-winning actress can currently be seen playing Michelle Obama in The First Lady, a TV series on Showtime. The show also stars Gillian Anderson as Eleanor Roosevelt and Michelle Pfeiffer as Betty Ford. We should be seeing her on the silver screen again before the year is over, with The Woman King coming out in September. The Woman King will be a historical epic about The Kingdom of Dahomey, one of Africa’s most powerful states in the 18th and 19th centuries. The movie is based on true events and also stars John Boyega, Lashana Lynch, Jayme Lawson, Hero Fiennes Tiffin, and more.
There’s no word yet on a release date or title for the Viola David Peacemaker spinoff, but we’re sure to learn more about it as it begins filming. Stay tuned to Giant Freaking Robot to keep up with the latest news.
