Russell Crowe Hates Hollywood So Much He Would Only Move There On One Condition

Oscar-winner Russell Crowe doesn’t think of himself as famous. The New Zealand native, who gained international recognition for his role as Roman General Maximus Decimus Meridius in the 2000 epic historical film Gladiator, says he just thinks of himself as Russell. He simply happens to have quite a few famous friends. And the last place he’d ever choose to live is Hollywood.
The Beautiful Mind star made the revelation in an interview with Great British Life, where he said there’s nothing quite like the beauty of Derbyshire. “It’s peaceful and so very beautiful in many different ways,” Russell Crowe said. When asked if he’d prefer Los Angeles to the rural setting, the 58-year-old was emphatic in his reply. “You work in LA, you don’t live there. I wouldn’t move to LA for anything other than the need to survive if everywhere else was made impossible,” he explained.
Russell Crowe added that living in Los Angeles feels like existing in a goldfish bowl. This is why he finds humble little counties like Derbyshire and the Peak District so appealing. He added that it’s not just the countryside that he loves, but the people too. “Everyone is very friendly and respectful and they don’t just stare at you as if you are something that has just landed, he told the publication. Recalling his time spent in Derbyshire and the Peak District, the actor loved how everyone treated him as a normal human being.

After bagging the prestigious Best Actor award for Gladiator, the actor appeared as whistle-blower Jeffrey Wigand in 1999’s The Insider and John F. Nash in 2001’s biopic A Beautiful Mind. He also starred in movies like the boxing drama Cinderella Man in 2005, the Western 3:10 to Yuma in 2007, and Robin Hood in 2010.
In 2012, Russell Crowe starred in the musical drama Les Misérables, and joined Henry Cavill as Jor-El in DC’s 2013 superhero movie Man of Steel. He made his directorial debut in 2014, with the drama The Water Diviner in which he also starred. Most recently, the popular actor joined the Marvel Cinematic Universe for the studio’s latest installment of Thor. The Oscar winner will make an appearance in Thor: Love and Thunder as Zeus, the King of the Olympians. Directed by Taika Waititi, who co-wrote the screenplay with Jennifer Kaytin Robinson, the movie is set for release on July 8th.
Russell Crowe is also set to appear as Nikolai Kravinov in the Spider-Man spin-off Kraven the Hunter. In the comics, Nikolai Kravinoff is the father of Sergei Kravinoff (Kraven the Hunter) and Dmitri Smerdyakov (Chameleon). Following some epic family drama, the Kravinoff family fled a post-revolution Russia and settled in the United States. When Nikolai died, Anna was committed to an asylum where she killed herself, orphaning their children.
Since Nikolai (played by Russell Crowe) was not a very good parent, they didn’t learn how to be good people. Dmitri stumbled down his own dark path, while Sergei survived through his cunning – eventually transforming into one of Marvel’s biggest super-villains. Kraven the Hunter will be directed by J. C. Chandor from a script by Art Marcum, Matt Holloway, and Richard Wenk. Aaron Taylor-Johnson will star as the titular character. The movie is currently scheduled for release on January 13, 2023.
