If you were expecting to exit the theater after seeing Margot Robbie star in the new Barbie movie, ready to slam your head against a wall because the Aqua song, “Barbie Girl,” was now living there rent-free, you needn’t worry. Although we bet it’s rattling around up there now, the Danish band’s manager, Ulrich Møller-Jørgensen confirmed with Variety that the song would not be making an appearance in the film. On top of that, Aqua wasn’t even asked to lend their earworm of a tune to the production – something that may come back to bite the team behind Barbie on their plastic behinds.

Distraught fans took to Twitter to share their upset with this odd decision with some saying they would push for a refund if the song was not included while others took matters into their own hands and dubbed the song over a promo shot of Margot Robbie’s take on the titular character. The lesson of both reactions is don’t mess with a 90s kid Europop anthem. What’s next, Eiffel 65’s “Blue” won’t be featured in Avatar 2?! Blasphemy!

While Margot Robbie may not be a fan of the song, it certainly is known to many. “Barbie Girl” first hit the airwaves in 1997 and quickly sold over 1.4 million copies in the U.S. alone. Those were the days when artists could get away with having a one hit wonder on an album and still be able to push the whole darn thing. A colorful music video showed off the equally colorful members of Aqua while lead singer, Lene Nystrøm sang about what it was like being a “Barbie girl in a Barbie world.” Band mate René Dif played a bald Ken, egging on Barbie to make bad decisions and party with him – that’s not the Ken we grew up with! The other two band members were… also there with guitarist Søren Rasted surely giving another 90s icon (we’re looking at you, Proto Zoa) hair inspo, and redhead Claus Norreen also having featured moments. Pretty much, Nystrøm was the original Barbie come to life, so Margot Robbie should have pushed more for the song to be included in the film.

As for the feature version of the wrapped in plastic queen, the film is being helmed by Greta Gerwig, who also co-wrote it alongside Noah Baumbach. While a plot hasn’t been announced, we’ll speculate that it will be a project filled with Barbie based jokes that doesn’t take itself too seriously. We can also base these presumptions from the filling out of the cast which consists of Ryan Gosling playing the Ken to Margot Robbie’s Barbie, Kate McKinnon, Simu Liu, America Ferrera, Ariana Greenblatt, Alexandra Shipp, Emma Mackey, Harif Nef, Issa Rae, Michael Cera, Will Ferrell, Kingsley Ben-Adir, Rhea Perlman, Ncuti Gatwa, Emerald Fennell, Sharon Rooney, Scott Evans, Ana Cruz Kanye, Connor Swindells, Ritu Arya, and Jamie Demetriou.

Whew, that’s a lot of names! And with a cast so huge that its leading stars, Margot Robbie and Ryan Gosling, aren’t the only giant names attached, it’s a safe bet that Barbie is going to be a blockbuster hit when it drives into theaters on July 21, 2023. But, one thing is for sure – it would’ve been an even bigger hit had they sought the rights to Aqua’s “Barbie Girl.” Now, please enjoy having that song stuck in your head for the rest of eternity.
