With the Obi-Wan Kenobi show right around the corner, fan hype is inevitably ramping up. It sounds like the hype is warranted though, as director Deborah Chow has recently indicated that we’ll get some surprise cameos during the series. We already know that we’ll be seeing Hayden Christensen and glimpses of a young Luke Skywalker, so who is left? Well, fans are hoping that maybe we’ll get to see Liam Neeson in Force-Ghost form as Jedi Master Qui-Gon Jinn.
Deborah Chow didn’t say anything explicit about Liam Neeson in her Total Film interview, but her words were vague enough to be open to interpretation. When speaking about Obi-Wan’s journey in the show, she said “There’s going to be different people that come into his life. One of the things I was trying to do with this series was to have the legacy, and who is important in Obi-Wan’s life, and to also have some new characters. So, it’s going to be a mixture of the two. But I do think there are some surprises to come. I hope.” Liam Neeson’s Qui-Gon Jinn was an important character in Obi-Wan’s life, mentoring him and taking him on as his Padawan. Jinn was cut down by Darth Maul in The Phantom Menace and fans have been chomping at the bit to see him again ever since. You can see his sad death below:
Fans of the animated series Star Wars: The Clone Wars will know Qui-Gon has made an appearance in the Star Wars canon again, and he was even voiced by Liam Neeson. Still, it would be great to see him reprise the character in a live-action format. In addition to Ewan McGregor’s Obi-Wan, Liam Neeson was one of the best parts of the Star Wars prequel trilogy, and we only got one movie to get to know him! Clearly, he has made a long-lasting impression on fans and that’s something Deborah Chow could take advantage of in the upcoming series.
Even if we don’t see Liam Neeson, the series is going to be filled with fan-favorite characters. In addition to Ewan McGregor, we’ll be seeing the live-action version of the Grand Inquisitor, who first appeared in the animated Star Wars: Rebels. Also, we’ll be seeing Joel Edgerton and Bonnie Piesse return as Owen and Beru Lars. Fans are also looking forward to seeing what Hayden Christensen does with Darth Vader after playing Anakin and depicting his turn to the dark side in the prequel trilogy. One thing that fans can count on is that they won’t be seeing a Darth Maul cameo, as Chow has told Total Film that Maul’s story has already been ended by Dave Filoni in Star Wars: Rebels.
So, as for surprise characters that would be important to Obi-Wan, Liam Neeson’s Jedi master is one of the few that fit the bill. Of course, there’s always a chance we could see Yoda or even the fan-favorite Ahsoka. Neeson reprising his role as Qui-gon would hold the same level of shock as Luke returning in The Mandalorian. In any case, we won’t have to wait too long to find out what surprises are in store. Obi-Wan Kenobi will be streaming its first two episodes on Disney+ on May 27. The series will be six episodes long.
