Jim Carrey Has Set An All-Time Record
Jim Carrey has been in the acting game for over 40 years, and now he has claimed to be retiring. However, his most recent film has achieved an important all-time record.
Jim Carrey man may have prematurely announced his retirement from acting. The man’s most recent and apparent last film has set a huge record. Ben Schwartz, who voices Sonic, has announced via Twitter that Sonic the Hedgehog 2 has surpassed the first film and become the most successful video game adaptation film in domestic box offices. That is a huge honor, and one that other studios may try and figure out how to replicate. The Sonic films have certainly been some of the most entertaining and fan-service video game adaptations, and this record is clearly proof of that fact. You can see the announcement below:
This is certainly some great news, but Mr. Schwartz might need some lessons on getting better quality GIFs. The original Sonic the Hedgehog film was able to secure just over $146 million in domestic box office numbers, the sequel has now gone over the $147 million mark, making it the most successful. To be fair, the first Sonic film came out during the pandemic, so that undoubtedly affected the numbers the film could have truly made in a normal release situation. Warcraft is the highest-earning video game adaptation film, as the worldwide numbers reached $439 million, but Sonic the Hedgehog 2 might be able to catch that film. According to Box Office Mojo, Sonic 2 is sitting at $289 million, and it has only been out for three weeks. Jim Carrey retiring might also have a lot to do with these numbers, assuming this is truly his final film.
There is meant to be a Knuckles spin-off series that will follow the events of the film, or at least serve as a prequel to when the Echinidas makes his way into the world of Sonic. Idris Elba is also set to reprise his role as the red menace. Also, without giving too much away, the post-credit scene from Sonic 2 alludes to even more Sonic films being made. Make sure you stay past the opening credits to see this scene if you haven’t seen the movie already. However, the producers of the film said they would not be recasting Jim Carrey if he is retiring. That would be some unfortunate news, considering he has been perfectly cast as Dr. Robotnik. Losing Carrey would be something that might derail the inevitable third film. At least, until another villain steps into the shoes of Robotnik. His technology could theoretically still be used by his peon, Agent Stone. Stone has been in both films so far.
Sonic the Hedgehog 2 is currently in theaters, and this could theoretically be the final film we see Jim Carrey in. The man does deserve to spend some time away from a film set, as he has been in the industry for over 40 years. We are just being a little bit selfish in hoping that he still wants to return at some point. Especially when it comes to appearing as Robotnik in Sonic 3. Even a small cameo would be perfect. Go watch Sonic 2, and see why it is being hailed as one of the best video game adaptations ever made, and also why it is #1 all-time at domestic box offices.
