When it comes to series or miniseries based on real-life events, the results can sometimes be a mixed bag. Depending on the subject matter, the landings can be tough to stick especially around certain characters. And when the subject is controversial it can be even tougher. But we are about to get a follow-up to one of these that really worked and John Leguizamo is going to reprise an awards-nominated character he had in the original. Deadline is reporting that Paramount+ is putting out a sequel to their 2018 miniseries Waco with American Tragedies: Waco – The Trials. It will be a follow-up to the original story, this time dealing with the fallout of the original events and the legal proceedings that happened in the wake of the standoff at the Branch Davidian compound.

This new series will have John Leguizamo returning to his role as ATF agent Jacob Vazquez who had worked undercover in the original series, trying to deduce just what exactly was happening with David Koresh at the Waco compound. The character ended up being integral to the initial investigation and Leguizamo was excellent in the role. He was nominated for Outstanding Supporting Actor In a Limited Series or Movie at the 70th Primetime Emmy Awards. He lost to Jeff Daniels from Godless.

In this follow-up series, American Tragedies: Waco – The Trials, John Leguizamo will bring back the character, this time as they litigate the fallout from the 51-day Branch Davidian standoff in Waco, Texas which ultimately led to the deaths of four agents and six Branch Davidian members in the initial attempt to break up the group. And then, tragically, the event ended with the death of 76 Branch Davidians (25 children) and the group’s leader David Koresh. Taylor Kitsch played the latter in the original series.

John Leguizamo will be reprising his role, but much of the cast of this sequel series will be new. David Costabile and  J. Smith Cameron are on as series stars and Giovanni Ribisi, Keean Johnson, and Abby Lee are on board as well. Constable plays the judge overseeing the trial, Smith Cameron is on as a former leader in the Branch Davidians, and Ribisi will play a trial lawyer. Johnson will play a younger version of David Koresh with the story skipping back in time some to look back at how the group originally formed. Michael Shannon is one other holdover from the original cast, reprising his role as FBI Agent Gary Noesner.

And apparently, John Leguizamo and company will be back for this limited series with the show releasing next year, the 30-year anniversary of the original events. And Leguizamo, for his part, has had a pretty good run here. He voiced Bruno in Disney’s Encanto. And he’ll also be starring in The Power which is based on the novel of the same name by Naomi Alderman. It is currently in post-production and will focus on a group of teenage girls who develop mysterious, and dangerous powers.
