Chris Pine’s Dungeons & Dragons Movie Finally Has A Title
We finally know what to call it.

The upcoming Dungeons & Dragons movie is one of the more curious big budget productions of recent years. With the exception of some of the bigger names attached to the film, there’s precious little known about it, in spite of it wrapping production last August. While there’s still so much we don’t know about the movie, we finally know one relatively major thing: the name. Currently scheduled to release on March 3, 2023, the title of the Chris Pine led film will be Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves.
Paramount and eOne announced the news today, as reported by Deadline. While the announcement of the name wasn’t accompanied by a plot description, the subtitle definitely invites some speculation. The film will be based on the decades-old tabletop roleplaying game Dungeons & Dragons. Considering the kinds of fantasy adventures players of the game often embark upon, it seems likely Chris Pine and his co-stars will be going after some kind of valuable treasure in the film. Maybe they’ll be going after a king’s treasure stores, or a dragon’s hoard?
One of the roles available to players in D&D is that of the Rogue, a class that was originally referred to as the Thief. So it seems likely Chris Pine or another actor will be playing someone who fits the bill. Rogues can be very useful when exploring dungeons in the game. They can pick locks, blend into the shadows to hide from approaching monsters, or disarm the kinds of traps that mean the end of so many treasure hunters. Take, for example, Harrison Ford’s eponymous hero in 1981’s Indiana Jones and Raiders of the Lost Ark — if he’d had a proper rogue with him in that opening scene, he might’ve avoided racing a giant boulder.
But beyond speculation, almost no details have been released about the plot. Along with Chris Pine, the film will star Michelle Rodriguez (Furious 7), Hugh Grant (Love Actually), Regé-Jean Page (Bridgerton), Justice Smith (Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom), Sophia Lillis (It), Chloe Coleman (Marry Me), and Daisy Head (Underworld: Blood Wars). The film is directed and written by John Francis Daley and Jonathan Goldstein, who previously collaborated as directors on 2015’s Vacation and as writers on 2017’s Spider-Man: Homecoming. They’re joined on the writing side of things by Michael Gillio (Kwik Stop).
Provided the film is well made, Chris Pine and co. will likely find themselves in a lucrative franchise. The immense popularity of Netflix’s Stranger Things — coupled with Dungeons & Dragons‘ importance in the story — gave the game a welcome shot in the arm. The Covid-19 pandemic gave it another boost. With people stuck at home and desperate for a way to connect with others, D&D offered a great alternative. Using different online resources like Discord, players were able to remotely unite forces to fight dragons, orcs, and everything in between.
Of course, if it feels too frustrating that we know so little about Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves, try to put yourself in Chris Pine’s shoes. The actor found out he was appearing in the upcoming Star Trek 4 at the same time everyone else did. Shortly after Paramount announced that the lead cast of the previous three Star Trek films was returning for a fourth which would begin filming before the end of 2022, it came out that neither any of the actors comprising the lead cast nor their representatives knew anything about it. It’s quite possible a D&D enthusiast might say something like “Paramount rolled a natural 1 on their Intelligence check.”
