Guardians of the Galaxy

The Guardians of the Galaxy has a new member. At least, that’s according to the new Thor: Love and Thunder teaser trailer that dropped today. There may have been more talk so far about “missing” characters — like Tom Hiddleston’s Loki, Zoe Saldana’s Gamora, and Christian Bale’s Gorr the God Butcher — but there actually is a blink-and-you’ll-miss-it reveal of a new Guardian.

About thirty seconds into the teaser trailer released today, we see the Guardians of the Galaxy assembled, and then suddenly they split off as if racing to fight some kind of threat. As they do, Thor picks up Stormbringer and walks in the opposite direction. While it may not be the case, with Thor’s voiceover you get the feeling his lack of action could have something to do with this apparent new non-superhero-ing philosophy. Regardless, if you pause the video just as the Guardians start racing away from Thor and look to the thunder god’s right, you may be able to catch the silhouette of Sean Gunn as Kraglin and, better yet, he’s wearing Yondu’s fin. You can see if you can spot it in the video below.

It seems that Kraglin has officially joined the Guardians of the Galaxy, and not just as a sidekick driving the ship. He’s on the ground with the team, wearing Yondu’s fin and armed with a pistol. If you didn’t manage to catch it in the video, there’s a blurry screenshot below, along with a comparison shot with Michael Rooker as Yondu, so you can recognize the shape of the fin.

In 2014’s Guardians of the Galaxy and for much of the 2017 follow-up, Yondu (Michael Rooker) only had a thin strip running down his skull — looking kind of like a cybernetic mohawk. In Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2, after much trial and error, Baby Groot gets the imprisoned Yondu his prototype fin. It allows him to regain control of his deadly arrow and wipe out almost all of the Ravagers on his ship who turned against him. After Yondu sacrifices himself to save Star-Lord, the latter gives Kraglin his adoptive father’s arrow. In the first of the movie’s record number of mid and post-credits scenes, we see Kraglin wearing the fin, trying to use the arrow, accidentally burying it into Drax’s (Dave Bautista) shoulder, and then quietly backs away.

Sean Gunn is a regular fixture in the films of his brother James Gunn, and has now become a frequent part of the Marvel movie viewing order. As well as playing Kraglin, Sean Gunn has been the body reference for Rocket in all of his live-action appearances. He was also both the bestial Weasel and the prisoner Calendar Man in last year’s The Suicide Squad.

The footage from the Thor: Love and Thunder teaser is pretty revealing as far as the question of Kraglin’s status in the Guardians of the Galaxy. He’s worked both against and alongside the team in both movies — not to mention joining the battle against Thanos in 2019’s Avengers: Endgame — but the shot in the teaser is the first time we’ve seen him actively on the ground, with the Guardians themselves and heading into action with them. Along with next year’s Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, Sean Gunn is also confirmed to appear in Disney+’s The Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special later this year.
