It’s only been a few months since Horizon Forbidden West launched, and Guerilla Games is already thinking about the Horizon Forbidden West sequel, acknowledging that Aloy’s latest journey ended with a cliffhanger, just like the original game. Fortunately, the series creative director, Mathijs de Jonge, revealed that there’s still plenty of material for the team to explore further and develop new storylines with, branching them out into new mysteries along the way — potentially expanding the series further.
As reported by GamesRadar+, de Jonge told VG24/7 that Horizon Forbidden West’s cliffhanger ending is where the development team is setting up some things for the next game once again, which is similar to what happened with the previous game, Horizon Zero Dawn. Of course, the creative director didn’t go into too much detail about what to expect in the Horizon Forbidden West sequel, but he did point out that the series is “really about the mystery,” with each installment exploring the mysteries of the past and the present in-game world.
De Jonge also stated that there are plenty of backstories the development team can tap into to further develop new storylines for the series and create new mysteries from what’s already established in the narrative. That means that Guerilla Games can craft new experiences based on the existing material, so it doesn’t necessarily have to continue Aloy’s adventure but start an entirely new one. However, the Horizon Forbidden West sequel is likely to continue the series’ protagonist’s adventures that could possibly tie the stories of the Old World together with the current in-game setting.
There’s really no telling what course the next game might take. Will the next installment in the series, which is supposedly getting its cinematic universe, take us to the Far Zenith’s colony and set the narrative in the new world? Or will the next game take Aloy across Europe and Asia, uniting people from other tribes in an effort to lead a global resistance? Nobody really knows anything about the Horizon Forbidden West sequel at this point besides the development team, and they’re not likely to share that information yet.
The original game, Horizon Zero Dawn, was released in 2017 to generally favorable reviews from the critics and the audience. Many praised the game’s open world, exploration, story, visuals, combat, characters, and the voice cast. However, the game’s dialogue, melee combat, and character models received some criticism. It also won several awards and sold over 20 million copies by February this year, making it one of the best-selling PlayStation 4 games ever.
Horizon Forbidden West was released in February of this year, and while the PlayStation 5 version of the game polarized the critics, the PlayStation 4 version reached universal acclaim. Critics mostly disagreed about the impact of the expanded scale of the game’s world, missions, and story. However, it successfully continued the achievements of the previous game and improved upon them in every way possible for a sequel. Unfortunately, the game’s sales suffered due to direct competition with Elden Ring, which was released one week later, and recently got its living legend.
