Misha Collins has a new acting gig lined up, and it’s at the same place he’s worked at for more than a decade: The CW. Collins has confirmed that he signed on to the network’s pilot of Gotham Knights, a live-action series based on the DC comic book and video game. Reports that he had signed on to the show surfaced weeks ago, but now he is already sharing some interesting details about his character. While participating in a panel at this past weekend’s SPN Indy Convention (a Supernatural convention) Misha Collins confirmed he will be playing Harvey Dent, and that he will likely not become Two Face in the first season, but in a possible season to come.
“I had a little compunction about that because I know my ex will be like ‘Fitting role!’ That did actually cross my mind, I don’t want somebody to have such an easy insult for the rest of my life!” He went on to reveal: “If it gets picked up and turned into a series – which would be really cool – my character will be Harvey Dent for the whole first year, so I have a nice long stretch of not being two-faced. And then I become Two-Face! Yeah, I’m looking forward to it and I’ll be the old person on the show!”
Misha Collins also noted that the production level of the pilot is top-notch, and he hopes it is picked up to go to series. “Warner Bros. seems to be putting a lot into the pilot, it’s great, it seems like it has a great team behind it,” he said. His comments were made at a recorded panel. You can see the panel below, but be aware that the full video is an hour long.
The network describes the show’s premise as revolving around Bruce Wayne’s adopted son, who teams up with the children of Gotham’s villains after they are framed for Batman’s murder. Together, they form an uneasy alliance to clear their names and protect their city. Having Misha Collins play Harvey Dent makes sense to provide a connection to the Batman mythos, without the iconic hero Bruce Wayne actually appearing. It sounds a bit like a mashup of Arkham Asylum and Disney’s Descendants, so we’ll see if the show clicks with audiences. At the very least, it has a winning production team behind it, which should be familiar to fans of The CW’s DC shows.
Gotham Knights was originally published as a comic book in 2000, and has had several incarnations. The CW’s live-action version, however, appears to be based on the upcoming video game. The Gotham Knights series will not be connected to Greg Berlanti’s Arrowverse of shows currently on the network. It will, however, have Berlanti’s Arrowverse production team behind it, including Sarah Schechter and David Madden. Chad Fiveash, James Stoteraux, and Natalie Abrams (Batgirl and Supergirl) are writing the script. Joining Misha Collins are Oscar Morgan as Turner Hayes, Anna Lore as Stephanie Brown, Olivia Rose Keegan as Duela Dent, Navia Robinson as Carrie Kelley (who became Robin, then Batgirl, then Batwoman in the comic books), Fallon Smythe as Harper Row, Tyler DiChiara as Cullen Row.
While Misha Collins is best known for playing Castiel on Supernatural, he has a wide-ranging career. He has appeared in Girl, Interrupted, NBC’s time-traveling series Timeless (as Untouchable Eliot Ness), ER, and Monk. He also played the villain Alexis Drazen in a memorable season of Keifer Sutherland’s 24 back in 2002.
