It’s never too late to show off your Oscar look, as Penelope Cruz just proved. The 47-year-old showed off her timeless beauty in a new black-and-white photo featuring her in the Chanel gown she wore to the Academy Awards at the Dolby Theater in Los Angeles on March 27. The picture was posted on Cruz’s Instagram account today, to the delight of her six million followers. You can see the photo below:
The 2022 Oscars were not a social appearance for Penelope Cruz. She was a nominee for Best Actress in a Leading Role for her performance in Parallel Mothers. Although she didn’t win (the Oscar went to Jessica Chastain for The Eyes of Tammy Faye), she still earned wide acclaim for the role, which was directed by her long-time collaborator Pedro Almodóvar. Cruz has been nominated for four acting Oscars in her career, winning once in 2009 for Best Actress in a Supporting Role for Vicky Cristina Barcelona, also directed by Almodóvar. In fact, three of her four Academy Award nominations have come from Almodóvar films, starting in 2006 with a Best Actress nomination for Volver. Her 2009 win made her the first Spanish woman to win an Oscar. She has also been nominated for four Golden Globes in her career.
Her 2022 Oscar look made the “Best Dressed” list of many fashion critics. Harper’s Bazaar praised the dress as “classic Chanel glamor” in timeless black. The halter ball gown featured buttons down the sleek front with hidden pockets in the flowing, elegant skirt. A metallic bow in what Harper’s called “the brand’s trademark tweed” hung below her neck.
A week ago, Penelope Cruz shared a video highlighting her time at the Oscars, and her Chanel gown. The video featured her star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame and the sights and sounds of Hollywood, mixed in with footage of her on the Academy Awards red carpet. Cruz is a Chanel ambassador, so the video was produced by the iconic fashion brand to promote her signature red carpet look.
This past year has been a big one for Penelope Cruz, despite the pandemic. She was recently honored at the 14th annual Museum of Modern Art Film Benefit, presented by Chanel, for her long, illustrious career. She even gave a speech about her experiences, her love of film, and her many films with her friend and fellow Spaniard Almodóvar. She praised his ability to write and direct “incredible, complex female characters,” and gave much of the credit for her success on the silver screen to the “brilliant directors who have inspired me, taught me, and helped me grow as an artist and a person.”
Her performances in critically acclaimed films like Blow and Vanilla Sky, and even crowd-pleasing favorites like Murder on the Orient Express and Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides, proves Penelope Cruz is an actress who always delivers. We might even see Cruz join the DC movie universe one day. Last November, Pedro Almodóvar told Variety that he would love to direct a Batgirl movie. Cruz loved the idea and said she would jump at the chance to play the character. “I don’t even need to read that script… I haven’t done that genre, but with Pedro, it would be revolutionary,” she told Variety at the Oscars.
