Josh Brolin is doing the expected thing of somewhat grizzled American actors and putting a cowboy hat on for that range life. Specifically, Brolin will be starring in a new series for Amazon Prime Video called Outer Range, and the trailer for the show has just dropped. The premise of Outer Range is that the man who would be Thanos is a Wyoming rancher (with a great beard) named Royal Abbott, who seems to have an idyllic life in the country with his family. Then a mysterious woman named Autumn (Imogen Poots) shows up with the vague notion of camping on the property for a few days, and things start to get really weird. Check out the trailer here:
Putting aside the fact that modern television showrunners seem to think far more people in America live on picturesquely dramatic ranches than they actually do, Outer Range looks like a darker, stranger version than the various Taylor Sheridan series we have been receiving en masse. The trailer for the new Josh Brolin show is definitely intended to be an intriguing teaser more than anything, but there are enough hints to tease out some recurring elements. There’s that weird semi-geometric symbol on their property that Imogen Poots seems shocked and elated to find. There’s a shot late in the video where it appears a large military encampment establishes itself at some point. There are some creepy-close ups of childrens’ faces against diffused white backgrounds, and of course, a big giant hole that suddenly appears in the middle of Josh Brolin’s property.
Westerns have been a part of American pop culture basically East Coast colonizers began moving to the other side of the country, but they definitely have had a resurgence in recent years. The Kevin Costner-starring Yellowstone (and its rapidly multiplying spin-offs) is one of the most popular shows on television, and it appears Amazon Prime Video is taking note. Outer Range definitely has a creepier, more science-fiction tone than the soap opera dramatics of Yellowstone, and there is definitely a niche for supernatural Westerns to be filled. Josh Brolin himself is no stranger to Western motifs, with his breakthrough role being in the Coen Bros’ 2007 film No Country for Old Men. Although primarily a film actor, Brolin has also dabbled in television over the course of his career. His last regular TV gig was actually another Western, the TNT miniseries Into the West, in which he played legendary frontiersman Jedidah Smith.
Josh Brolin is returning to TV at a good time. There has never been a better period for film stars to pop into television for a while without damaging their marquee reputations, and the competition between the major streaming platforms is creating an escalation of constantly produced new content. Outer Range is the first project to be developed by writer/producer Brian Watkins and is being produced by Amazon Studios and Plan B Entertainment (which was also behind 2021’s The Underground Railroad with Amazon). The first episode will premiere on April 15, 2022.
