The Fast and the Furious has come a long way since the first installment in the franchise. In just over two decades it has grown to nine films and one spin-off. These days the Fast Saga is set to bow out with two final movies, the next, Fast and Furious 10, will star Jason Momoa as an antagonist and according to multiple reports, Momoa may just have let slip Charlize Theron is returning as well.
The Aquaman and Game of Thrones star Jason Momoa was speaking to Entertainment Tonight and his enthusiasm may just have led to him spilling the beans on Theron’s return to the Fast franchise as villainess Cipher: “I get to shoot with some really cool people that I have never — I get to work with Charlize [Theron] first up, which I’m really excited about. “But yeah, I’m excited I’m working with Vin. I’m excited I’m working with Charlize.”
What’s striking about Jason Momoa’s giddy excitement is that his apparent Fast 10 co-star Charlize Theron doesn’t appear to have been officially announced yet. The Oscar-winning actress doesn’t even have the film on her upcoming projects on her IMDB.com profile. However, whilst some may see Momoa’s statement as a revelation, to Fast and Furious fans, the return of Cipher should be no surprise. Charlize Theron’s Cipher served as the main antagonist in the eighth film in the franchise, before returning in the ninth film alongside fellow antagonist John Cena, who was playing Dominic Toretto’s estranged brother. At the end of Fast & Furious 9 it looks as though Cipher meets her demise when Vin Diesel’s Dominic Toretto appears to destroy her fighter plane, only for the film to reveal she was operating the plane remotely. The bottom line is Cipher is a slippery character, who has returned once before, and it should be no surprise that Momoa has signaled a second return.
Jason Momoa will be joining a long list of Hollywood A-Listers that have graced Fast & Furious when Fast & Furious 10 hits theatres on May 19, 2023. On top of Charlize Theron and John Cena, stars to grace the series include Jason Statham, Luke Evans, Djimon Hounsou, and of course Dwayne Johnson. The latter of course, unlike Theron, will most definitely not be returning. Dwayne Johnson made his Fast & Furious debut in the fifth movie and starred in three further films before appearing in the spin-off Fast & Furious Presents: Hobbs & Shaw. It has been well documented that during his time in the franchise, Johnson didn’t see eye to eye with franchise lead Vin Diesel. Last year, Diesel made a public attempt to bury the hatchet and lure Dwayne Johnson back for the final two Fast films. Johnson later rebuffed this notion.
Since Johnson’s departure, John Cena has taken the position of former WWE star turned actor in the franchise. In Jason Momoa, the franchise has another hugely charismatic actor that will hopefully let Vin Diesel forget Dwayne Johnson’s absence from Fast & Furious 10. If the devastating Cipher played by Charlize Theron truly is returning, then there is more than enough to keep fans entertained. Not only this, but Momoa isn’t the only DC Comics star set to feature in the movie, with The Suicide Squad’s Daniela Melchior is reportedly involved. Fast & Furious 10 is set to be the penultimate movie in the franchise, with the original cast members bowing out after Fast & Furious 11.
