Critics Have Chosen The Worst Angelina Jolie Movie
We now know, for sure, what the worst Angelina Jolie movie is, and how it stands out against the rest of her prolific resume.

Angelina Jolie has had one of the more interesting runs in all of Hollywood. The Academy Award-winning actress has done thrillers, comedies, love stories, big-budget action, and seemingly everything in between. Heck, she’s even part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe now and could be playing a major role in some of their future films. So it’s all kind of been on the table for the actress over the last couple of decades. But with this kind of resume, we know there will be a stinker or two in there. In this case, the worst Angelina Jolie movie is clearly Original Sin.
In what looks very much like an excuse for the two main characters to just make out for a few hours on screen, Original Sin stars Angelina Jolie as Julia Russell, a woman courted by Antonio Banderas’s Luis Antonio Vargas. Set in the 1800s in Cuba, Vargas sends away for Russell as a mail-order bride. In what clearly is one of the biggest wins this kind of marriage device has ever had, at least in the looks department, Angelina Jolie shows up at his door and things get off to a pretty promising start. But it doesn’t take long for things to go off the rails. Check out what I mean in the trailer for Original Sin.
It turns out that Angelina Jolie isn’t who she says she is and runs off with that Banderas money, sending the two on a spiral of deceit, more kissing, some sinning (obviously), and a story about how no one can really trust each other in this world. You can see from the trailer that it all looks pretty ridiculous, overly feeding the passion without ever really seeming like it has a handle on the story. Again, much of it looks like a vehicle for as many makeout scenes as possible with the thinnest thread of story pulling it all together.
And critics weren’t all that kind to Antonio Banderas, Angelina Jolie, and the rest of what went into Original Sin. On Rotten Tomatoes it’s sitting at a laughable 12% (though audiences went higher at 61%) with critics taking all kinds of digs at it. They used words like “boring”, “cliche”, and “preposterous” just to name a few. It was pretty much a mess though was able to snag back more than $35 million at the box office when it first came out.
Original Sin came along early for Angelina Jolie after she’d become an established name but was still relatively new in the grand scheme of Hollywood. She had just won the Best Supporting Actress Award for Girl, Interrupted the year prior, and was also coming off the Primetime Emmy Award for her work in Gia. But this was also when she was being eyed for bigger budget flicks because of her growing star power. She did Gone in Sixty Seconds and nabbed the lead in Lara Croft Tomb Raider right in that same calendar year. Again, big things were happening. Original Sin just wasn’t one of them.
