When it comes to playing the “Material Girl,” all bets are off. After a slew of actresses went through a grueling audition process, the folks behind Madonna’s biopic, including the mega-star herself, have narrowed the list down to only five names. Known for picking top talent and shaping productions including Stranger Things, Magic Mike, and the upcoming remake of Haunted Mansion, casting director Carmen Cuba is at it again. Recently, The Hollywood Reporter got the scoop from Cuba of who was in the final pool of names. The lineup includes Florence Pugh, Julia Garner, Alexa Demie, Odessa Young, and Emma Laird. A sea of incredible talent, each one of these performers would be an excellent choice to portray Madonna on her rise to stardom.
The fight to step into the lacy boots of the “Like A Virgin” songstress was anything but easy. Florence Pugh, Alexa Demie, and the other women went through lengthy singing, acting, and dancing sessions which at some points lasted 11 hours. Keep in mind, no one has even nabbed the role yet! Making sure her voice was heard, Madonna took charge during many of these rehearsals with her choreographer by her side. Like she left her mark on the casting process, the pop superstar also had a big hand in creating the biopic. Because most movies telling the story of Madonna’s life were created by men, she decided to strike out on her own and regale fans with the real story as told by the woman behind it all.
As of right now, details surrounding the script are being kept tightly under wraps, but we have a general idea of what we can expect to go down. The high point of the production, which Madonna penned alongside Chloe writer, Erin Cressida Wilson, will be 1990’s Blond Ambition world tour. The tour is a thing of legend and cultural change as Madonna creatively led the production into five different visual ideas: Metropolis, Religious, Dick Tracy, and Art Deco, followed by an encore. A show full of sexual references paired with religious imagery, the tour was protested and shunned by countless cities along the way. Sure to bring the heat, whether production chooses Odessa Young, Florence Pugh, Julia Garner, Alexa Demie, or Emma Laird, any would be an excellent choice.
Many will be cheering on 26-year-old Florence Pugh whose career in America began to rise in 2019 following her performance in the equal parts stunning and terrifying, Midsommar. Things continued upwards for Pugh that year when she starred in Little Women, for which she would nab a nomination for both an Academy Award as well as a BAFTA. Crossing over into the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Pugh took on the role of Natasha Romanoff’s (Scarlett Johansson) adopted sister, Yelena Belova in the 2021 film Black Widow. She would carry over her portrayal of the character into the Disney+ series, Hawkeye.
The choice behind who will be cast to play the blonde bombshell will be a tough one. With so many talented names tossed into the ring, it will be a close call. No matter who comes out on top, this will definitely prove to be a once in a lifetime opportunity.
