Seth MacFarlane is undoubtedly one of the most gifted comedic minds of our generation. He is the creator of one of the longest-running animation shows on television, Family Guy, which started in 1999. He also coupled that with another hit series called American Dad. His humor is certainly on par for most of the works he’s involved in. While his film repertoire isn’t as extensive as his television work, there is one of his films that is beloved by all and climbing the streaming charts. The beloved and foul-mouthed teddy bed, Ted. The film sees Mark Wahlberg wish his teddy bear had the gift of life, which happens, only this is not a “happily ever after” kind of story. Ted gets old and so does John Bennett (Wahlberg). Chaos ensues as the pair are older and now living as roommates.
One of the things that set Ted apart from most other comedies, is the hilarious realism that the story involves. A bear in the 1980s comes to life, and would it then stay that age? Well, of course not. Seth MacFarlane also saw the great comedic nature that Mark Wahlberg could produce and added him to the cast immediately. Ted followed the smash comedy, The Other Guys, which saw Wahlberg and Will Ferrell team up as oddball detectives. While that film is certainly the buddy-cop type, Ted is more of the raunchy buddy-best friend type. Ted sees John Bennett being friendless in 1985, wishing that his teddy bear comes to life, which he does. They grow older with one another and are now roommates. John Bennett is currently in a relationship with Lori Collins, but their relationship becomes strained by the antics of Ted. Those antics include bringing hookers over during Lori and John’s anniversary dinner. They fight with one another, and Ted is asked to leave and finally go out on his own, which doesn’t go that well. The film stars Wahlberg, Seth MacFarlane as Ted, Mila Kunis, and a host of other random comedians and actors that includes Giovani Ribisi, Patrick Warburton, and Joel McHale.
One of the most hilarious scenes of the entire film was when John (Mark Wahlberg) and Ted fight one another in a hotel room. John insults Ted by claiming that he wished he got a Teddy Ruxpin instead of Ted. This reference might go over a lot of peoples’ heads, but Teddy Ruxpin was a teddy bear toy from the 1980s that “talked.” That talking was mostly the prerecorded messages you could playback at the push of a button. So, John and Ted go after one another, and it ends up being quite a brutal fight between them. It’s hilarious, to say the least. The fight was also nominated in the “Best Fight” category of the MTV Movie Awards. You can see a clip of the fight below:
Ted was the directorial debut film for Seth MacFarlane. While this may have been his first directed film, it was highly successful. On a budget of $50 million, the film would go crazy both in the US and overseas. The worldwide box office numbers ended up being just over $549 million. While the film holds a decent 69% critic rating on Rotten Tomatoes, with a 73% audience rating, you can’t argue the numbers. The movie was a hit. So much so, that it led to a Ted 2 sequel, which brought back Mark Wahlberg. Sadly, Mila Kunis did not return, but the sequel is just as ridiculous as the first film. That is the beauty in the humor that Seth MacFarlane brings in many of the things that he writes. Most of what he writes is so absurd, but in that is the genius, because the absurdity is aware of itself. Some writers tend to hesitate on where they should draw the line, but he goes skipping past that line all the time.
Ted is certainly the type of film that excites people who want a good laugh without needing to care about such an extensively smart plot. Sometimes we all need to turn our brains off and let a raunchy and simplistic comedy make us laugh. Mark Wahlberg and Seth MacFarlane are a hilarious pairing and there is a huge reason why this comedy is in the top ten of HBO Max right now. Fans of Family Guy and American Dad will certainly get a lot of the same humor and absurdity in Ted.
