Alexandra Daddario has been exploding onto the Hollywood scene in a big way. She has been an integral part of the highly talked about HBO series, The White Lotus. Now it seems that her performance on that show has led to her next casting, which is the lead in the new AMC series, Mayfair Witches. The Mayfair Witches show is going to be directly based on the popular Anne Rice novels which are titled The Lives of the Mayfair Witches. This is not the first time in which Rice’s work has been adapted into a live-action format. Interview with the Vampire and Queen of the Damned are both films based on Anne Rice’s The Vampire Chronicles.
Anne Rice sadly passed away in December of 2021, but now her memory will continue living on through the Mayfair Witches. The show was said to have been picked up by AMC in December as well, so this could have been the last deal that Rice had made for a live-action adaptation. This is just speculation, but it would be great if this was the case. Anne Rice’s work is still legendary all its own. Alexandra Daddario has been cast as the lead role of Rowan. Rowan is a highly intelligent doctor who wrestles with the fact that she is the heir to a family of witches. This premise is giving off some of the Dark Shadows vibes.
Mayfair Witches has been given an eight-episode first season order, and the goal is to have the series to be released sometime later this year. It will air exclusively on the AMC cable channel as well as on the AMC+ streaming service. According to Dan McDermott, who is the president of entertainment and AMC studios for AMC Networks, “Alexandra is a singular talent who has lit up the screen in everything she’s been in and we couldn’t be happier to have her on board leading the cast of a series that will be a centerpiece of an expanding Anne Rice universe on AMC+ and AMC.” He is certainly right about one thing, Daddario is certainly very talented. It’s going to be exciting to see her in a darker lead role.
While there hasn’t been an Anne Rice since Queen of the Damned was released, Rice had made a deal with Paramount in releasing a series based on her novels. Though that was the initial idea, that deal fell through, leaving the series to travel to Hulu. In 2019, those rights had expired and AMC swooped in the following year to purchase the rights of The Vampire Chronicles and Lives of the Mayfair Witches. Those rights purchased were for both film and television projects. Anne Rice and her son Christopher were said to be executive producers on anything related to her stories. Landing Alexandra Daddario is certainly a big get for this new and upcoming expansion into the Anne Rice mythos.
Mayfair Witches is currently in the pre-production stages but aims to be released later in 2022. On top of this new show starring Alexandra Daddario, it has also been announced that an Interview with the Vampire series is on its way as well. Sam Reid and Jacob Anderson are set to star in that new adaptation. Sounds as if AMC is doing its part in bringing back the Anne Rice universe in a big way.
