See Rose Byrne As Elvis In Seriously Red

Rose Byrne is a seriously talented and gorgeous actor. Ever since breaking through to American audiences with 2011’s blockbuster comedy Bridesmaids, she has demonstrated that she can be hilarious, she can be stylish, she can be dramatic. And now: she can be Elvis. In an Instagram post promoting her upcoming movie Seriously Red, Byrne is decked out as the King of Rock n’ Roll himself. Judging by the height of her black pompadour hairstyle and bolo tie, and lack of a bedazzled jumpsuit, this appears to be mid-early period Elvis, rather than the traditional Las Vegas-era Elvis favored by impersonators. Byrne is also flanked by a fellow impersonator, this one is decked out as the Queen of Nashville herself, Dolly Parton. Played by co-star/Seriously Red writer Krew Boylan, Dolly is sporting a classic messy blonde beehive hairstyle and sequined top and corset. It is a match made for the ages. Seriously Red is the first feature film from Dollhouse Pictures, an independent film production company founded by Krew Boylan, Rose Byrne, Jessica Carrera, Shannon Murphy, and Gracie Otto. The lattermost is also directing the film, which is described as a “musical dramedy” heavily featuring the music of Dolly Parton. Parton herself has signed off on the project, which lends a certain weight and class to the movie. Seriously Red follows Rose Byrne’s character, a woman with low-self esteem named Red who leaves her dull real estate job and falls into a wild world of celebrity impersonators. The plot also seems to indicate that it had always been Red’s dream to be a Dolly Parton impersonator, and the Elvis get-up is due to a misunderstanding, so it will be interesting to see how that shakes out. Particularly so since noted character actor Bobby Cannavale will co-star as a love interest and Kenny Rogers impersonator. Will there be a dramatic reenactment of this iconic scene? Rose Byrne began her career in her native Australia, featuring on television shows and eventually films. Her international career took off after being cast in Danny Boyle’s science fiction film Sunshine, and then later, the sequel to his zombie movie 28 Weeks Later (directed by Juan Carlos Fresnadillo). She was primarily known for dramatic work in her earlier career, but starring in Bridesmaids with an ensemble cast that included Kristen Wiig, Melissa McCarthy, Ellie Kemper, and Maya Rudolph quickly turned her into a comedic lead. Other similar roles followed, co-starring with Seth Rogen and Zac Efron in Neighbors (and its sequel, Neighbors 2: Sorority Rising), and in The Internship and Peter Rabbit.
Dollhouse Pictures is dedicated to promoting women-led film work, and with two female leads, a writer, and a director, Seriously Red is definitely that. It looks like the film will split the difference between Rose Byrne’s comedic chops and her dramatic roles, but it will have to remain to be seen how her Elvis is. While this isn’t the only Elvis-related film coming out this year, this will definitely be the one with the most Dolly Parton.
