Lisa Kudrow Wants To Reboot Her Best Character

The 2022 Screen Actors Guild Awards featured the best and brightest in Hollywood star power. But it was Lisa Kudrow and Mira Sorvino’s ‘90s nostalgia characters – Romy White and Michele Weinberger – that has everyone talking about the possibility of an epic movie reboot. During her successful run as Phoebe Buffay on the NBC sitcom Friends, Lisa Kudrow managed to fit in a little side project called Romy and Michele’s High School Reunion. Since the movie celebrates its 25th anniversary this April, the former co-stars appeared in outfits that echoed their characters’ styles as they presented the award for Best Comedy Ensemble.
The pink and blue sparkly suits worn by the pair was a cool nod to the movie’s dance scene which sees Michele (Lisa Kudrow) wearing a metallic pink mini dress with feather detail, and Romy (Mira Sorvino) wearing a blue version (minus the feathers). Following their attention-stealing appearance at the awards show, fans were left wondering if a new project featuring these characters could be in the works.
Unfortunately, Romy and Michele’s High School Reunion 2 is not currently on the cards. But if were up to Lisa Kudrow and Mira Sorvino, they would be happy to return. The revelation was made by Sorvino during a red carpet interview with Extra. “For me, that’s always been a hope and a wish. I saw lots of people asking for it. So, Disney here’s your sign from the sky! People have a hunger for it, and we’d love to do it,” the actress said.
The Human Trafficking star also explained how she and Lisa Kudrow decided to channel Romy and Michelle at the SAG Awards. Speaking of the moment which saw the pair referencing the movie by pulling out Post-it notes on the stage, she said they were asked to present together and thought it would be nice to have a little homage to their characters. She also described how the ideas snowballed from coordinated outfits to the Post-it notes which were her husband’s idea. She got her team to source some Post-its for the big night.
Directed by David Mirkin, Romy and Michele’s High School Reunion is based on characters from the stage play titled Ladies Room by Robin Schiff which also featured Lisa Kudrow. The story follows 28-year-old best friends Romy and Michelle, who decide to invent fake careers to impress former classmates at their ten-year high school reunion. The 1997 film also stars Janeane Garofalo, Alan Cumming, and Julia Campbell.
Since starring in the cult comedy film, Lisa Kudrow appeared in various other roles for which she received wide acclaim. The Opposite of Sex in 1998 won her the New York Film Critics Circle Award for Best Supporting Actress and a nomination for the Independent Spirit Award for Best Supporting Female. And in 2005, she went on to produce, write and star in the HBO comedy series The Comeback, which was revived for a second season nine years later.
Most recently, Lisa Kudrow lent her voice to Honey in the adult animated sitcom HouseBroken. Created by Jennifer Crittenden, Clea DuVall, and Gabrielle Allan, the series premiered on Fox in May last year. It was renewed for a second season in August 2021. The story follows Honey, a therapy dog who explores human dysfunctions and neurosis by applying her knowledge of psychiatry by leading a group of other anthropomorphic neighborhood animals in group therapy sessions.
