Fleabag’s Phoebe Waller-Bridge Finally Has A New Show
Phoebe Waller-Bridge has just been announced to have a new show on Amazon Prime Video, several years after signing a massive overall deal.
After several years of development, writer/actor/producer/Fleabag Phoebe Waller-Bridge has a new show ready to begin. Well, at the very least Amazon Prime Video has greenlit a show and at some presumably it will begin. Waller-Bridge signed an overall deal with the streaming media branch of the all-powerful megacorporation in 2019, but this is the first announcement she has a solo show confirmed. That is not to say Waller-Bridge has not been busy; in fact, in the time period between signing the massive deal and her having a show announced to begin production, she has done more work in Hollywood than many do in their entire career. Given that she had already made an enormous splash in both her native United Kingdom and the United States with her show Fleabag, she pretty much has things set for the time being.
There are currently no details about Phoebe Waller-Bridge’s new show, but considering her track record, it is safe to say it is already hotly anticipated. It is notable that Waller-Bridge signed a three-year overall deal in 2019, and we are coming right up on the end of that contract. In Hollywood parlance, an overall deal means that the studio (Prime Video, in this case) owns all ideas or projects developed by the contractee, usually in perpetuity. So it may be that Waller-Bridge has been pitching shows to Amazon this entire time, but they just couldn’t decide on the right one. Given that her deal reportedly came with a staggering $20 million a year paycheck, probably not a lot of skin off her back if they want to wait this long to greenlight something.
Phoebe Waller-Bridge first came to prominence in the UK as a theater writer and performer. She originally performed her future hit show Fleabag in embryonic form at the London Storytelling Festival all the way back in 2012, then further developed it in 2013. Then, in 2016, Fleabag was adapted by BBC Three as a television show. It moved up the ranks to BBC Two, and then Amazon Prime Video knew a good thing when it saw it and bought the rights to stream in the USA. It was an enormous critical and popular hit, winning six Primetime Emmys for its second season (including Outstanding Comedy Series). Since then, Waller-Bridge created the acclaimed assassin drama Killing Eve, as well as being showrunner for its first season.
After leaving Killing Eve, Phoebe Waller-Bridge has since moved in film. Naturally, she almost immediately began working on some of the biggest projects in the world. She did motion-capture performance and voice acting for a rebellious droid in Solo: A Star Wars Story and co-wrote the final Daniel Craig James Bond film, No Time to Die. She is currently set to star in the upcoming fifth Indiana Jones film with Harrison Ford (and presumably not Shia LaBeouf). While her role is undisclosed, pictures from set have led to rumors that she may be playing Jones’ daughter. Hopefully, Prime Video will give us some update about her new project soon.
