Patrick Stewart Confirms Professor X Is In Doctor Strange 2, Our Scoop Confirmed

After seeing the first major trailer for Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, one of the not-so-great mysteries was whether that was actually Patrick Stewart’s voice we heard in the background. It seemed obvious that it meant that Professor X was officially coming into the Marvel Cinematic Universe, at least in some fashion. But the actor had been cagey about whether that was him or not. It led to a little media cat and mouse, but now the iconic actor has given up the goods and finally admitted the truth. Confirming the previous Giant Freakin Robot exclusive, Patrick Stewart is officially joining the MCU and will be making an appearance in Doctor Strange 2.
Speaking with Jake’s Takes (via MovieWeb), Patrick Stewart let on about the situation involving his appearance in the upcoming movie and why he had obfuscated so much early on when it seemed clear that it was obviously his voice that appeared during the trailer. In a scene in which Benedict Cumberbatch’s Doctor Strange is being led by the Ultron robots into some kind of tribunal, he looks up at the group and a voice comes in with, “We should tell him the truth.” That voice belongs, now definitively to Patrick Stewart, and the actor explained what happened to him when the trailer first aired. “I had my phone turned off as it happened and so I didn’t hear anything. It wasn’t until the next morning when I woke up and looked at my phone and found that I had been bombarded with responses…I actually didn’t recognize my own voice. It sounded different. Whether I had a cold or something at the time, I don’t know. But, I was astonished. All they saw was the back of my shoulder, and I think my earlobe, nothing else that there would have been so many connections made. It pleased me.”
Whether Patrick Stewart is being a bit tongue-in-cheek about this appearance, or not recognizing his own voice isn’t totally clear. He obviously knew he was in the movie, though I suppose he could be forgiven if he wasn’t paying close attention to the release schedule of a particular trailer. I suppose there’s a world, especially one for such an iconic actor as Stewart, where these things are just commonplace. The work is the work, and he can’t get wrapped up in all the little bits of hype around a project. After all, this guy has played some of the most fan-favorite characters of all all-time. Forgive him if it’s all a little ho-hum.
Because we are in a new age of comic book films, one that allows for all sorts of involvement from previous iterations of characters, it seems like it will become almost commonplace to revisit different versions from the past. And with the Marvel Cinematic Universe, they are in a particularly interesting spot regarding the X-Men. There are already two different versions of this group, with the Patrick Stewart and Hugh Jackman-led cohort from the first franchise. And then we have the James Mcavoy, Jennifer Lawrence, etc group from the First Class edition. Could we see all of these folks in some respect when it is all said and done? It isn’t out of the question and a number of previous X-Men actors and actresses have already expressed a willingness to jump back into the fray.
How much Patrick Stewart actually appears in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness remains to be seen. There are all kinds of other rumors around who could appear in the good doctor’s jaunts through other dimensions (Tom Cruise anyone?). And this tribunal appearance could be nothing more than a short off-ramp when it’s all said and done. The film looks pretty incredible from the early trailers. But it’s nice to know that we will officially get Patrick Stewart back in the mix. And this would seem to open the doors to other X-Men of the past making appearances before it’s all said and done.
