Yellowstone has easily become the most talked-about show since Breaking Bad. The series follows the life of the Dutton family, as they deal with the drama of big business meddling in their affairs as ranchers. Through the massive popularity of the show came the spin-off series, 1883. The series takes a historical step backward and follows how the Dutton family came to prominence and secured their land. While there hasn’t been an official announcement made, there are significant events that will lead into the future for a potential 1883 Season 2.
The End of 1883
Per our usual warnings, if you have not seen 1883, stop reading right now. Everything beyond this point is going to be spoilers for the show and 1883 Season 2. So, with the wild ending of the spin-off, many are wondering where the show can go from here. If you have happened to catch the finale you would know that two major events happened and are literally going to shape the future of the show. Elsa Dutton tragically dies due to the arrow wound she had received, while the usual case of shows is a good ending, this was not. Also, Shea finally lives his promise of showing his wife the coast one last time, and then he tragically took his own life. Clearly, these characters were not meant to carry over further. While we are all saddened by this ending, it makes sense for the characters. However, now we need to see the fallout for the Dutton family after losing their daughter.
More Episodes Announced
The executive producer of Yellowstone, David Glasser, sat down with The Hollywood Reporter to break down the ending of 1883. Although there was never a plan to continue 1883, there are plans for what sounds to be a two-part movie that has been ordered by Paramount+. He clarified a ton of speculation that fans had about the whole ordering of new episodes. While these new episodes seem to be a bridge from 1883 to the newest announced prequel, 1932, they are not. According to Glasser, I don’t want to give away too much, but 1932 was always intended to be the [1883 Season 2].” That’s incredibly interesting and genius in that the prequels and their time frames are serving as the proverbial “sequels.”
However, it was also revealed by Glasser that more content for 1883 is being produced. He continued, “Now the network is excited to bring you something really additional to 1883, which is super exciting. There was one way set with it — there was one version — and now there’s going to be two versions.” Stating that these are two movies is speculation, it can also be put together by the producer’s words. It sure sounds as if 1883 Season 2 might consist of two long episodes or potentially two movies that connect it to 1932. Either way, it sounds like there are more Yellowstone prequels on the way and 1883 might mold itself into the beginnings of 1932.
Deadline also caught up with showrunner Tim Sheridan to get his thoughts on the ending of 1883 and its future. According to Sheridan in relation to the ending of 1883 and revisiting those characters, “For me, as a storyteller it feels close ended. I’m going to peek through the window of a different era and see what I see then.” That era is 1932 and it sounds as if the goal is now to transition to another period where the Dutton family is thrust into another situation entirely. While both these interviews paint a different picture, there is more 1883 on its way, but again, it could serve as a bridge into 1923.
1883 Season 2 Release Date
While Paramount+ has not officially announced when this 1883 Season 2 expansion will come out, it should be sooner rather than later. This is all considering that 1932 is sure to be on its way soon. The conclusion of 1883 would need to happen first, assuming the producers and showrunner are accurately following eras. They could all be produced at the same time and released in the same manner. Either way, “1883 Season 2″ and 1932 are both the next chapters in the Dutton-verse.
