Iron Man flew onto screens in 2008 and changed cinema forever. The MCU was born, and from that became a plethora of films that would make Disney and Marvel one of the richest pairings in the entire world. Everyone has a soft spot for Iron Man and the relationship that Tony Stark shared with his virtual butler, Jarvis. Even though Paul Bettany was the voice of Jarvis in the first film, and subsequently became Vision after, there was a Jarvis that preceded Bettany in terms of historical time. Robert Downey Jr took to Instagram to share a picture with the “O.G. Jarvis.” You can see the pic below:
Now fans might be a bit confused about this fact, considering that Paul Bettany was the first live-action Jarvis. Well, the reasoning behind Robert Downey Jr saying that he was with the original Jarvis is more about fan service. James D’Arcy played Edwin Jarvis in the Agent Carter series, which fans will remember took place way before Tony Stark took the reins. Edwin Jarvis was Howard Stark’s butler. Yes, Tony’s father. However, this is not the only time in which we see Edwin Jarvis. D’Arcy reprised his role as the Stark butler in Avengers: Endgame when Tony goes back in time and confronts his father in the 1970s. The fact that RDJ is posting a photo and signifying the importance of Tony and Jarvis going on a hike is sure to bring back fond memories for all.
Sorry if this is spoilers for anyone, but Tony Stark died at the end of Avengers: Endgame, and that ultimately ended Robert Downey Jr portraying Iron Man. The long-standing and perfectly casted man had finally had enough of being a superhero, and he bowed out of the MCU in the most Tony Stark way possible. Ending his life with the line which kicked off the entire Marvel Cinematic Universe. It’s great to see RDJ giving fans a small booster, as we all miss him in that role.
There are massive rumors swirling about who might step into the role of Iron Man, now that Robert Downey Jr has graciously stepped down. While that remains unclear, there are those who believe that an alternate version will appear in the new Doctor Strange film. With the multiverse essentially going crazy in Spider-Man: No Way Home, things are about to get even wilder. Doctor Strange 2 promises to truly break open the multiverse and it is rumored that Tom Cruise will appear as the iron-clad billionaire. This is all wild speculation, but it would make sense considering he was originally pegged to land the role of Iron Man.
Regardless of what happens, Robert Downey Jr became a legend after becoming Tony Stark and Iron Man. It was the role that arguably saved his career and made him a fan favorite around the world. Maybe the original Jarvis will find some way to convince the man to strap back on the armor for one more appearance. Imagine seeing RDJ in Doctor Strange 2? That would be epic.
