Ever since Marvel was able to bring in the majority of their comic book catalog under the same studio banner, we’ve been waiting on word around what was planned with Ryan Reynolds and the Deadpool franchise. One of the most popular comic book characters on the big screen right now, it will be interesting to see how it all folds into the Marvel Cinematic Universe. We’ve been patiently waiting for updates on that front with the studio and Reynolds mostly mum on the subject for some time now. But that could be changing sooner than later with the actor letting on that news is on the way soon around plans for the next film.
Speaking with Steve Weintraub from Collider, Ryan Reynolds gave a non-specific, though encouraging update around where things stood with Deadpool 3 and when we might hear more specifics on the studio’s plan. During the talk, which admittedly was more focused on the upcoming The Adam Project that will team Reynolds with Shawn Levy again, the discussion did veer into Deadpool territory and what could be happening with the next movie. Check out what Ryan Reynolds had to say about where they stood in the process.
“I’ll say this about that particular subject is I’ll have a batch of updates on that sooner rather than later, I hope. So I’ll be able to get into stuff about Deadpool a little bit more clearly and definitively down the road.”
Ok, so what can we take from this Ryan Reynolds mini-update about the status of Deadpool 3? For starters, while it doesn’t get into any specifics, this is for sure a signal that things are happening on that front. The actor has been mostly queit in the past and had even intimated that he was taking a break from acting in the short-term after putting together a bunch of movies over the last couple of years. But if the script is reaching the final stages, which is where they seem to be in the timeline, then we could be getting some more concrete news around production timelines. That would be the logical next step even if we can predict that the actual movie itself is still years away.
One of the big questions regarding Ryan Reynolds bringing Deadpool into the Marvel Cinematic Universe was just how the studio would deal with this character who’s taken a decidedly R-rated approach to the comic book genre. That’s been divergent from how the rest of the industry, up until now, has operated. And because the MCU exists under the Disney banner, many have wondered if the studio would want to dial back the character to reach a wider (read: younger) audience. There had even been rumors that Reynolds and the studio were at odds around how to approach this. But by all accounts now, it does seem like they will end up keeping the original tone of the character we’ve seen in the past.
Before we get anything on Deadpool 3, Ryan Reynolds could have another hit on his hands when The Adam Project releases on March 11th. The team-up between Reynolds and Levy will feature the former as a time-traveler who’s gone back in time to help his younger self. Mark Ruffalo, Jennifer Garner, Catherine Keener, and Zoe Saldana are all part of the cast as well.
