Dwayne Johnson’s Best Movies
The best Dwayne Johnson movies include Fast & Furious flicks, the Jumanji franchise films and more.
Dwayne Johnson is easily one of the most sought-after and busy men in all of Hollywood. When it comes to Dwayne Johnson movies, there are few bigger stars than the former wrestler.
Although it seems as if he doesn’t have time for all he is doing, Johnson’s schedule is chock full of upcoming brand-new releases and sequels to some of the biggest fan-favorite films that he has been in.
Ever since Dwayne Johnson first appeared on the small screen as WWE’s “The Rock,” son of the late wrestling legend “The Soul Man” Rocky Johnson, he has been a draw (with a massive net worth). Whether being a heel or a hero, The Rock always brought eyes to the small screen as well as the arenas he helped fill.
His showmanship and ability to deliver a convincing line, cheesy or not, in the wrestling ring was a perfect way to hone his acting chops for his eventual crossover to Hollywood feature films.
Not all of Dwayne Johnson’s movies have been critical hits, though his fandom seems to follow him, no matter what the film is about. Some of these “misses” include films like San Andreas, Rampage, Walking Tall, Race to Witch Mountain, Tooth Fairy, Baywatch, Skyscraper, and even his latest release, Black Adam.
Moana Is Dwayne Johnson’s Best Movie
REVIEW SCORE
It should not come as a shock to some to find out that one of Dwayne Johnson’s top-rated movies is an animated feature. In Moana, Johnson supplies the voice of Maui, the once-powerful demigod who is on hand to guide Moana on a daring trip across the ocean to save her people.
During their trip, Moana and Maui battle monsters and near-impossible odds so Moana can fulfill her goal as well as find out who she truly is.
In a few of Dwayne Johnson’s movies, he has shown in the past that he can carry a decent tune. He does not disappoint in this one as he is out front and solo with “You’re Welcome,” a song written by longtime Disney contributor Lin-Manuel Miranda.
Furious 7 Is Dwayne Johnson’s Best Fast & Furious Movie
REVIEW SCORE
As far as Dwyane Johnson movies go, Furious 7 is the first of a number of Furious titles that appear on Johnson’s top-rated list. Johnson joined the franchise in 2011’s Fast Five as Luke Hobbs and since that time has appeared in four Fast films plus one spin-off.
While Johnson’s involvement in this film was a continued fun addition, the film was more notable for being the last one for Paul Walker, who died tragically in a car accident before filming was complete.
Filming was rightfully so suspended and when the movie went back into production, Walker’s brothers, Caleb and Cody, were stand-ins to help complete Paul Walker’s remaining scenes.
Fast Five
REVIEW SCORE
Speaking of which, there’s another Fast film to add to Dwayne Johnson’s movies list. Fast Five was the first in the franchise that Johnson appeared in as Diplomatic Security Service agent Luke Hobbs.
He is introduced to take down Dom Toretto (Vin Diesel), Brian O’Conner (Paul Walker), and Mia Toretto (Jordana Brewster), who have been framed for murder. Overall, it’s par for the crazy course with this film seeing as how all of the action is dialed up to the nth degree.
Jumanji: Welcome To The Jungle
REVIEW SCORE
One of the more fun films of Dwayne Johnson’s movies is the 2017 sequel/reboot Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle. Spinning off from the 1995 Robin Williams-led Jumanji, this one takes moviegoers right into the Jumanji game. Johnson plays Dr. Xander “Smolder” Bravestone, who is an experienced archeologist. As Bravestone, Johnson is given the powers of super strength, super endurance, super speed, and the ability to look at someone with his “smolder.”
Also starring with Johnson in this fun film is Kevin Hart, Jack Black, Karen GillanRhys Darby, Nick Jonas, and Bobby Cannavale. Alex Wolff, Morgan Turner, Ser’Darius Blain, and Madison Iseman play the high school students who turn into the game avatars.
DC League Of Superpets
REVIEW SCORE
DC League of Super Pets is another of Dwayne Johnson’s animated movies that has been very well received. It once again teams up Johnson with Kevin Hart as Johnson voices Krypto, Superman’s pet dog, while Hart voices Ace/Bat-Hound, who eventually becomes Batman’s pet dog.
The vocal cast of DC League of Super Pets is impressive and includes Kate McKinnon, John Krasinski, Natasha Lyonne, Diego Luna, Marc Maron, Olivia Wilde, and Keanu Reeves.
The story follows Bark Kent/Superdog who becomes jealous when Superman begins to date Lois Lane. Understanding this, Superman goes to an animal shelter to find Superdog a playmate. This ends up being Ace and from there, their super crimefighting adventures begin.
Fast & Furious 6
REVIEW SCORE
The third Furious film on Dwayne Johnson’s movie list but the second one in which he starred. Johnson returns as Luke Hobbs, who is after Owen Shaw (Luke Evans). In order for Dom Toretto’s team to receive amnesty, they must agree to help Hobbs in capturing Shaw.
To give Dom a little push, Hobbs shows him a picture of Dom’s wife, who supposedly had been murdered.Fast & Furious 6 is filled with action and car stunts galore, making it one of the more popular films in the franchise.
Jumanji: The Next Level
REVIEW SCORE
Jumanji: The Next Level is the second go around on Dwayne Johnson’s movies list and one that sees everyone from the first (or is it second) Jumanji film return. Joining the cast are Danny DeVito as Eddie Gilpin, the grandfather to Spencer (Alex Wolff), and Danny Glover as Milo Walker, Eddie’s ex-best friend.
Jumanji kicks into the next level when upon returning home from their various colleges, the group of Martha, Fridge, and Bethany discover that Spencer has returned to the world.
Determined to find and save him, they all jump back into the game, only to be joined by Eddie and Milo. Johnson, Kevin Hart, Jack Black, and Karen Gillan are back on hand as their former Jumanji avatars with a little bit of a twist.
The Rundown Is An Underrated Dwayne Johnson Movie
REVIEW SCORE
Made in 2003, this was the second leading role for Dwyane Johnson, following a small part in The Mummy Returns and his first leading role in The Scorpion King. The Rundown is a great early addition to Dwayne Johnson’s movies and a fantastic pairing of Johnson with Seann William Scott (Stifler from the American Pie franchise).
The film has Johnson playing Beck, a “retrieval expert” aka bounty hunter, who is tasked to go find the son, Travis (Scott) of his boss, a gangster named Billy Walker (William Lucking). Beck wants out of the business to start his own restaurant, so a deal is made for this one last job.
The job takes Beck to Brazil where he quickly tracks down Travis and in the meantime meets bartender Mariana (Rosario Dawson) and also runs afoul with the local heavy, Cornelius Hatcher (Christopher Walken). Trust us, it’s a fun movie.
Central Intelligence Is A Hilarious Dwayne Johnson Movie
REVIEW SCORE
This is the very first of Dwayne Johnson’s movies in which he starred with comedian Kevin Hart. In this one, Hart is Calvin Joyner, a bored accountant who reunites with a former high school classmate, Bob Stone (Johnson) on the eve of their High School reunion.
What Calvin does not know is that Bob is actually a CIA agent who may or may not have killed his former partner in order to sell satellite codes.
Putting Johnson and Hart together on the big screen for the first time showed just how funny Johnson could be as he stood toe to toe (when he bent down) with the diminutive Hart with laughs. It would be the beginning of a beautiful relationship.
Fast & Furious Presents: Hobbs & Shaw
REVIEW SCORE
With Dwayne Johnson’s Luke Hobbs becoming more and more popular within the Fast & Furious franchise, it was time to branch out. Adding to Johnson’s movies list is the Fast spin-off, Fast & Furious Presents: Hobbs and Shaw.
The “Shaw” in this instance is Jason Statham’s Deckard Shaw. The pair must put their vast differences aside and team up to go up against a genetically enhanced bad guy by the name of Brixton Lore, played by Idris Elba.
Joining Hobbs and Shaw in their battle is Vanessa Kirby’s Hattie Shaw, Deckard’s sister, who is being pursued by Brixton for a supervirus that Hattie carries. The battles are fierce and fun.
These are just a few of Dwayne Johnson’s movies. If you are a fan of his work, you will be pleased to know there is more to come. Much more, so let’s see what the future holds for Dwayne Johnson.
Recent And Upcoming Dwayne Johnson Movies
Black Adam Hit Theaters on October 21, 2022
The most recent Dwayne Johnson movie is Black Adam, a film that has been highly talked about by Dwayne Johnson and fans alike. Johnson made his debut in the DCU, as villain-turned-hero Black Adam.
The movie has had an interesting reception to kick things off. On the one hand, the Rotten Tomatoes score is sitting at 39% with critics, well, critical of the overall output of the superhero foray for Johnson.
On the other hand, the Audience Score is 90%, making it one of the bigger discrepancies we’ve seen between these two numbers for a big-budget film in some time. The box office is playing out well for Dwayne Johnson and company though with the movie taking in more than $147 million through the first weekend.
But with DC making major changes under James Gunn, Dwayne Johnson won’t get a movie sequel with this one. Black Adam 2 isn’t part of the plan for the studio going forward.
Red One Will Be A Dwayne Johnson Christmas Movie
A more unknown project that Dwayne Johnson is set to star in is the original holiday film Red One. Although there is little known about this presumed Christmas movie, Hiram Garcia announced that Jake Kasdan would be directing this film. Kasdan has directed both Jumanji films.
Red One is also being released on Amazon Prime Video. The film’s plot is being kept under wraps but so far Chris Evans is set to join Johnson.
The story has also been cultivated by Garcia. Although the film is in pre-production, Garcia and Johnson are aiming for a Q3 2023 release, just in time for the holiday season.
The King Will Have Dwayne Johnson Ruling Hawaii
In this movie, Dwayne Johnson is going to play King Kamehameha, who was the first monarch of the Kingdom of Hawaii. The film will apparently focus on how he united the Hawaiian Islands in the 19th century. It will be directed by Robert Zemeckis with Randall Wallace penning the script.
The casting of Dwayne Johnson in this role did prompt some blowback among Hawaiians who questioned why someone native to the islands wasn’t put in the main role. But because of the nature of the story and Johnson’s involvement, there is a chance this one is another film that reaches peak blockbuster status.
San Andreas 2 Looks Like Another Disaster Movie
When you are as popular as Dwayne Johnson, a lot of your movies are going to get sequels. That’s just the nature of the blockbuster business, and from an acting and studio standpoint, this is often where you want to be. So it’s not all that surprising to know San Andreas is getting a follow-up movie in the near future.
The original came out back in 2015 and had Johnson trying to survive the mother of all earthquakes. Of course, he did, and now it looks like they are going to do it all again. We will see if Warner Bros., after all of their shakeups, still has an appetite for this film.
Dwayne Johnson Will Bring The Whole Gang Back Together For Jumanji 3
The rebooted Jumanji films have been some of the biggest fan-favorites that Dwayne Johnson has appeared in as of late, although nothing has been officially announced, Hiram Garcia confirmed that they are very interested in making the third installment and that they would be taking the pitch to Sony very soon.
Although fans will want to see the sequel as soon as possible, Garcia confirmed that Jumanji 3 would likely be some time after Red One. If Red One comes out around the holidays of 2023, then it stands to reason that Jumanji 3 won’t be making its way to screens until sometime in 2024. Garcia confirms this is more of a perfect time considering that both Johnson and Kevin Hart are very busy with the million other things they have been attached to.
Dwayne Johnson And Emily Blunt Returning For Jungle Cruise 2
Another Dwayne Johnson fan-favorite film is that of Jungle Cruise, which took Johnson’s and many of our favorite Disneyland rides and turned it into a full-fledged movie. Johnson and Emily Blunt worked well together as they played adventurers thrust into a wild world based on the popular ride.
Although the sequel to the film has yet to be announced, Hiram Garcia claims that this is one of the top priorities for their production company. When this film would even come out might be a bit of a conundrum, but we might see a Jungle Cruise 2 sometime in 2024 or 2025.
Journey 3 Is Said To Be In The Works
Unfortunately for fans around the world, it sounds as if Dwayne Johnson is not going to be making a Journey to the Center of the Earth sequel. Being the good guy that he is, Johnson took to Twitter to announce the sad news to a young fan. You can read the tweet below:
Apparently, creative issues became the problem for the would-be trilogy film in the Journey series.
The Smashing Machine And Big Trouble In Little China
And, of course because this guy is as hard working as it gets, Dwayne Johnson has been involved in a couple notable projects related to the The Smashing Machine and the Big Trouble in Little China remake.
For starters, The Smashing Machine will be directed by Benny Safdie, where Dwayne Johnson portrays MMA legend Mark Kerr. The film is set for release in 2025, chronicles Kerr’s journey from a successful collegiate wrestler to a prominent figure in mixed martial arts. It also will deal with the struggles with addiction and personal relationships.
Supposedly Johnson underwent a significant transformation for the role, using wigs and makeup to closely resemble Kerr. He’ll be joined by Emily Blunt, who plays Kerr’s wife, Dawn Staples.
Regarding Big Trouble in Little China, Johnson is set to star in a reboot of the cult classic, which aims to honor the original while introducing new elements to the story. This project is still in development, and Johnson’s involvement has generated excitement among fans of the original film.
