Netflix has canceled their space drama series Another Life after just two seasons. Season two debuted last October and the decision to cancel the show comes a mere four months later. The show’s star, Katee Sackhoff shared the news with fans on social media this week. While the streamer didn’t provide an official reason for the cancellation, the actress said more seasons were just not in the cards.
In a heartfelt tweet, Sackhoff spoke fondly of the Netflix show. She thanked everyone who watched and supported Another Life. She also expressed her gratitude to the cast and crew for always working so hard and being prepared. “I wish we could do more seasons but sadly it’s just not in the cards. See you. on the next adventure,” she wrote. The actress also signed off with “Love Niko” – a nod to her character on the show.

While Another Life’s cancellation may come as a shock to fans, it may have been due to its poor reception. Reviews were mostly mixed as Rotten Tomatoes gave the Netflix series an average rating of 4.54/10. Critics were not too kind either, describing the show as a hodgepodge of science fiction homage which lacks the distinctive spark necessary to set it apart from the array of stories it aspires to be. However, the cast was praised for their performances.
Moreover, Netflix generally gives the new season of any series 28 days to make an impact on the site. While the streamer rarely reveals viewership statistics about a show’s success rate, FlixPatrol says Another Life failed to reach the site’s overall top 10 in the United States or the United Kingdom at any point. Its highest success was an eight-day streak in Slovakia. While the show did manage to reach the overall top 10 in 13 countries, it dropped out of the ranking within the week.
Created for Netflix by Aaron Martin who also served as showrunner, Another Life debuted on the platform in July 2019. The story begins when an unidentified flying object shaped like a large Möbius strip, lands on Earth and grows a crystalline tower above it. Erik Wallace, a scientist employed by the United States Interstellar Command, attempts to communicate with the alien structure.
Meanwhile, his wife, veteran Captain Niko Breckinridge (played by Katee Sackhoff for Netflix), takes the spaceship and its young crew to determine the origin of the artifact and establish contact with the aliens who sent it. The ship is capable of faster-than-light travel and carries most of its crew, who slumber in hibernation pods, to be awakened when needed.
The Netflix series also starred Justin Chatwin as Erik Wallace, Samuel Anderson as William, A.J. Rivera as Bernie Martinez, Alexander Eling as Javier Almanzar, JayR Tinaco as Zayn Petrossian, Lina Renna as Jana Breckinridge-Wallace, Selma Blair as Harper Glass, Elizabeth Ludlow as Cas Isakovic, Tongayi Chirisa as Richard Ncube and Dillon Casey as Seth Gage. Blu Hunt, Alex Ozerov, Jake Abel, Jessica Camacho, Barbara Williams, Parveen Dosanjh, Greg Hovanessian, Chanelle Peloso, and Tyler Hoechlin round out the cast. The first two seasons are still available to stream on Netflix, so fans can determine if the show was cancel worthy.
