Considering the amount of comedy that John Cena and James Gunn brought forth in the first season of Peacemaker on HBO Max, it’s not surprising that there would be a number of outtakes from the production. After all, this was a show that made its bones on the doltish nature of the lead and the epic back-and-forths among the primary group of characters. With a silly story at its backbone, the series was one one-liner after another with plenty of heart along the way. Its layered approach and dynamic casting are just a couple of reasons for its success. And their ability to have fun is what made Peacemaker such an enjoyable series. Now we get a chance to see some of the outtakes for John Cena and company with a gag reel that acts as a true compliment to the series.
James Gunn took to Twitter to post a more than nine-minute video of outtakes from Peacemaker Season 1 and it’s definitely worth the watch. For starters, it’s clear that John Cena did more than his share of ad-libbing during the season and was responsible for cracking both himself and other castmates up time and again. And he isn’t the only one because we get plenty of Danielle Brooks struggling to keep it together as well. There are plenty of laugh-out-loud moments in this reel with Cena consistently getting the best of his co-stars. Check it out:
Ah, this is just all so great. Peacemaker was already about as funny a superhero series as you’ll ever see with James Gunn’s vision and quick-witted dialogue carrying the day. But it’s also obvious from this post that one of the main reasons the show worked was that the cast clearly had an absolute blast putting this all together. It’s clear from the outtakes that one of the goals, especially on the part of John Cena, was to keep everyone in stitches as much as possible. There are multiple examples of him clearly going off-script in an effort to get others to break on camera. And it completely works time and time again. Fans of the show will just absolutely love this because it’s just so on brand with everything else we saw from the series.
The success of Peacemaker on HBO Max for its first season meant a quick announcement following the season finale that the second run of episodes was already in the works. Both James Gunn and John Cena took to social media to make the announcement that they would be bringing back the core crew for another round in this universe. In addition to Brooks’ Leota Adebayo, we should also see returns of Jennifer Holland’s Emilia Harcourt, Steve Agee’s John Economos, and Freddie Stroma’s Vigilante. I think we can assume Eagley is back in the mix as well.
John Cena as Peacemaker is a clear shift in the way DC is taking some of its new characters, a carryover from what James Gunn put together with The Suicide Squad last summer. An irreverently funny and overtly bloody approach is just what this franchise needed and it’s such a breath of fresh air to have a series that wants to have fun more than anything else. That shines through in this blooper reel for Peacemaker.
