Jensen Ackles, the star of one of the CW’s most successful series, Supernatural is developing a DC project, and it looks like Arrowverse head Greg Berlanti will be attached. Both men have a long-standing relationship with the CW and Warner Bros. Ackles starred as Dean Winchester on the dark fantasy drama for 15 seasons, while Berlanti has served as an executive producer on DC/CW television series like Arrow, The Flash, Legends of Tomorrow, Supergirl, and Superman & Lois.
The Boy’s star Jensen Ackles broke the news back in January when he revealed he was developing a DC property with Warner Bros on Michael Rosenbaum’s Inside of You podcast. “There is a DC property that I’m currently developing right now with Warner Bros. and some other good partners that I’ve got my fingers crossed for,” said the 43-year-old actor. Confirming the news, South by Southwest, better known simply as SXSW, announced Ackles would have a panel set for the upcoming March 11 conference. On the conference’s site, the panel set description confirms Ackles’s untitled project while divulging that Greg Berlanti would be involved as well.
While we are sure to find out more details at the upcoming event, the speculation points to the untitled project being a television series likely headed for The CW. However, there is a chance it may land home on HBO Max. Hopefully, Jensen Ackles’ panel will not only uncover what type of media the DC project will be but also which DC property they will be working on together. Similarly, we have to point out that the breaking news does not confirm Ackles’ role with the project, so it remains a mystery whether or not the celebrity will appear as a character, or remind behind the scenes for this project.
Since Jensen Ackles first broke the news in January, fans have heavily speculated which DC property the Supernatural alumni would bring to life. Given that DC has nearly ten thousand characters at its disposal, the possibilities are endless. However, that hasn’t stopped fans from speculating. One of the more popular theories among fans suggests the untitled project could be Red Hood-related. Ackles previously voiced the DC antihero in the beloved 2010 animated feature, Batman: Under the Red Hood, which saw Jason Todd resurrected many years after his brutal demise at the hands of the Joker. Ackles once again trolled DC and fans with the notorious character in 2018, when he dressed up as the vigilante for Halloween.
While working in the industry since 1998, Greg Berlanti got his start as a writer on Dawsons Creek. Sticking with Warner Bros and the CW most of his television career, he got his first taste in DC media when he co-wrote and produced 2011’s Green Lantern, starring Ryan Reynolds. While the movie wasn’t necessarily a huge success, his work landed him a future helming multiple DC shows for CW. Other than the upcoming untitled project alongside Jensen Ackles, Berlanti is set to continue his collaborations with DC. The Arrowverse guru will serve as an executive producer on HBO Max’s Green Lantern, and upcoming DC projects like Gotham Knights and Justice U. Likewise, Ackles remains busy with his role on The Boys along with gearing up to helm a Supernatural prequel, The Winchesters, for The CW.
